2020.09.23 15:24 Hedshodd RE: The New Portal Debate - A physicist's perspective

TL;DR: I have put TL;DRs under each section if you just want the cliff notes

so I watched Dan's and Destiny's "physics" discussion (there's a YT video of it now: Link), and because 95.2% of the chatters are absolute dumtrucks, and because Dan and Destiny hit on some, while basic for a physicist, still not super intuitive concepts, I wanted to chime in and clear some things up. Also, I'm on staycation, and I have nothing better to do.
Just for context: I'm a third year / almost fourth year doctoral candidate (for all intents and purposes a PhD student, we just cannot legally call it that in Germany) in numerical astrophysics. Usually I write simulation software to look at how black holes grow, but for that purpose I have a good (not a perfect!) understanding of hydro- and thermodynamics. Everything I am saying here is obviously up for debate, and I'm gonna source anything that you cannot just look up in a Physics 101 book (which is basically everything in the second half of this post), but I'm not going to claim that I definitely got everything 100% correct.
Before we even begin talking about any of this, we need to establish some basic terms here, most importantly heat and temperature:
The important part to note is that this is kind of a collision between the scientific and common language, because heat is not an intrinsic property like temperature or mass, but rather heat is a thing that is transferred. The important connection between heat and temperature is that a temperature gradient (a difference in temperature between two volumes) leads to a transfer of heat. So if a thing gets hot, that leads to it heating up its surroundings. If the difference in temperature between a hot thing and another cold thing is very high, or in other words the temperature gradient is very steep, you the heat transfer is more efficient (i.e. quicker) compared to if the gradient was rather flat.

Black panels and t-shirts:

Oh. My. God. Chat. Honestly, I cannot believe that "black things get hotter quicker" was apparently a new concept for a non-zero number of people in chat. It's like you have never been outside before. Though, tbh, that wouldn't actually surprise me. That's all I wanted to say about that bit, Destiny was completely correct with both the observation as well as the explanation.
TL;DR: Chat is dumb, moving on.
Sources: I'm not going to source this shit, because any normal human being should have learned this by age 10 from just existing in this world.
Edit: Not an engineer, so I won't touch whether or not solar panels have a bigger or lesser temperature foot print compared to other sources of energy. There's discussion about that in the comments, if you like.

Wind turbines:

On an open field the air is almost free of turbulence, and the air is in so called laminar flow (laminar = in layers). That leads to just layers of air of different temperatures nicely stacked on top of each other, with the warmer layers laying on top of the colder layers (hot air is less dense then cold air, and less dense things float on top of dense things). This structure is very good at cooling the ground, because it leads to a very steep temperature gradient in the air, so you end up with pretty cold air near the ground, that can very efficiently receive heat from the ground.
Btw, everyone who ever went camping on an open field knows how stupidly cold it gets on that field compared to the city or a forest just a couple miles away. This is largely (but not solely) why.
That gradient is essential for efficient heat transfer: A cup of coffee goes from 100° C to 90° C way quicker than from 40° C to 30° C, because the difference in temperature, the temperature gradient, between the coffee and the air in the room is way steeper in that first case compared to the second.
Now, if you have a machine that is not only a huge obstacle to your air flow, but also actively bumps around the air, you get turbulence, and the hot air up top gets mixed with the cold air near the ground, so you end up with a rather smooth temperature gradient. The air on top is now colder than it was without the turbine, because it was mixed with the cold air near the ground, and, most importantly, the previously cold air near the ground is now WARMER than it was without the turbine, leading to a less steep temperature difference between ground and air and thus less efficient heat transfer, i.e. less efficient cooling. By displacing warmer air near the ground, you make it harder to for the ground to cool during the night.
And where are those turbines built? In largely open fields. Thus, if you compare the temperature in that field to what it was prior to the turbines being there, you will see that the temperature rose, because now that field is way less efficient at cooling the ground compared to before.
Note: Afaik, this is largely in the realm of very-well-understood-hypothesis, because those hydrodynamics simulations aren't very easy to do, but maybe there have been new results I'm not aware of; I'm an astrophysicist, after all, not some field scientist.
TL;DR: Wind turbines mix the cold air near the ground with the hot air up top, thus creating warmer air near the ground compared to before the turbines were built, which is way less efficient at transferring heat from the ground, thus the ground can hold on to its temperature way better leading to an increase in local temperature.

1000W computer vs 1000W space heater:

Here's the question that Dan posed: Does a 1000W computer in a box heat up said box in the exact same way as a 1000W space heater.
Generally, YES, that power is all being turned into heat. If we wanna be really nit-picky, we would start talking about entropy, where the computer is decreasing its own entropy, by telling electrons exactly where to go (instead of them randomly going where ever they want), and organising bits on your RAM and disks, and that HAS TO come from an increase in entropy in a connected system which is the box the computer is seated in. Otherwise, we would be breaking the second law of thermodynamics (entropy in a closed off system can never decrease, it can only increase).
And because there is nowhere else for those 1000W to go (you're not lifting a rock, like in the later example), it HAS TO be converted into heat. The only other thing that energy can go into is into deformation, if your PC runs hot and things melt.
The underlying principle here is the conservation of energy, which says that, in a closed system, energy cannot be destroyed or created. If your energy source is in that box too (like a small generator maybe), the energy that is being freed up by the generator has to go somewhere, and unless you are also going to break the entropy law, you will have to end up with extra heat from the PC.
The space heater works pretty much the same way, the only difference is that the space heater does not do any meaningful work beside creating heat, that's pretty much it.
If you wanna know WHY it is turned into heat in the first place, the most important part is electrical resistance in the wire. If you run a current through a wire, that current will see an increase in temperature. You can basically think of that as those electrons bumping into the structure of the wire, and that "friction" turns into heat, just like when you rub your hands very quickly.
Now, a computer also has fans, and lights and stuff, but the photons will also eventually be absorbed by the something in the box (thus being turned into heat), same with the sound waves due to the fans. If the PC wasn't in a box, those packets of energy would just be deposited somewhere else, but they would still be turned into heat eventually.
TL;DR: They are the same temperature, because there is nowhere else for the energy that goes into the computer to go, since it's not doing any (macroscopic) mechanical work.
EDIT: There was a thing that came up in the comments that is not untrue. When the computer turns on there is some ramp up that mostly fills up capacitors and accelerates fans. That ramp up is going to be very efficient, comparatively, but both saturate. The fans will be at max speed, and the capacitors are going to be filled with the energy the computer needs for operation. Once that point is reached, all you are doing is keeping those states alive though, so that is all going to end up as heat (where else is that energy going to go, after all?). So, at the VERY BEGINNING, the PC might be slightly more efficient, but after both machines run for a moment the difference will negligible if not immeasurable.
Sources (basically you can just look into those basic principles, entropy, the laws of thermodynamics, and energy, but I found a couple of other discussions around the internet, that also explain these things, which I used to make sure that I don't make some obvious rookie mistake, tbh):

1000W space heater vs 1000W hamster wheel

Very quickly, Steven remembered correctly, and those physics PhDs apparently knew what they were talking about and weren't posers: As long as that wheel is still turning, the temperature in the box with the hamster wheel is going to be (possibly immeasurably, if you wait long enough) lower compared to the box with the heater, because some of the energy you pumped into the first box is bound in the kinetic energy of the wheel. Again, conservation of energy, BUT with the asterisk that technically those aren't closed systems since you are pumping external energy into them.
If you had boxes that cannot transfer heat out of the box, and you turned the wheel off, the energy the wheel loses to the air and its own construction while it's coming to a stop will slowly turn into heat and thus an increase in temperature and and then (again, if the heat cannot escape the box whatsoever) the two boxes would have the same temperature.
Source: Physics 101

1000W space heater vs 1000W rock lift (/ rock battery)

Again, the important thing here is conservation of energy. You CANNOT have a process that is more than 100% efficient. Technically, you cannot even have a process that is 100% efficient (unless we are talking about putting heaters into boxes that cannot, for some physically impossible reason, lose heat).
We actually had a discussion about this in the compsci channel in the discord, because efficiency is a wildly misunderstood concept. Efficiency compares the amount of energy you put into a process compared to the work you extract from the process. The discussion we had was over gas stoves, and whether a gas stove is 100% efficient, because all it does is heat things up. That is not the case, unless you literally turn the stove on with the sole intent of heating up the universe. Then all of that potential energy in the gas you're burning is contributing to your task. But, if you wanna cook something, some of the heat will just heat up the air, instead of your pot of noodles, so that energy is lost, thus decreasing the efficiency of your gas burning.
The "rock battery" won't be 100% efficient, because the friction in the lift will produce heat, just like the current in the wires, so that part of the input energy is already lost. Then, if you slowly let it sink, you CAN turn some if not most of that energy back into electrical energy, theoretically, but that process also won't be 100% efficient, and all you have essentially is created a battery.
Now, Steven's comment about the temperature in the rock battery room being LOWER compared to the space heater room is absolutely correct, because some (hopefully most) of the energy your lift used is now stored in the potential energy of the rock.
If the motor of the lift is running without displacing any matter, 100% of that energy will just go into heat, because it has nowhere else to go, yet again (it will probably also create sound, but that sound will also be absorbed by something). That lift will probably not actually draw 1000W, if it doesn't do anything with it, but if it does, it has to turn into heat. It has to go somewhere, otherwise we would be destroying energy.
Also, if your rock falls to the ground (instead of regenerating all that potential energy), its potential energy will, first and foremost, turn into kinetic energy, and then it will probably deposit that energy into the floor by creating sound and deformation (of both the rock and the ground, possibly). If your ground was sufficiently elastic, i.e. it does not break(!) or suffer permanent deformation, the (temporary) deformation of your rubber ground will turn into heat, actually, because it has literally nowhere else to go (same as the PC, again).
TL;DR: Destiny was spot on, but these concepts aren't necessarily intuitive, so I cannot blame Dan, tbh. Lifting stuff stores potential energy, and rocks hitting the ground deposits energy in form of heat and possibly deformation (which is kind of a mixture of potential energy and heat).
Sources: Physics 101 + my block of text about Computer vs Space Heater and the sources therein, because they all come back to the same concepts.

Air conditioning

The reason air conditioning creates "extra heat" is because the whole process is not 100% efficient (as I lined out earlier, such a thing is (basically) impossible), so that extra energy that you pull out the wall socket has to go somewhere.

Floating Boats

Honestly I cannot explain it better than the stack exchange thread Destiny found + Dan's explanation, but to clear up what the role of density is: Density determines whether a thing floats or sinks. Things with less density flow on top of high density things. That is why ice cubes float on top of water, because they are less dense (the volume of a pound of ice is larger than the volume of a pound of water). Dan's point at the end was spot on: If you increase the density of the boat (by putting heavy shit into it, without increasing the size of the hull!), it will sink in deeper into the water, thus submerging a higher percentage of the boat into the water, the water level HAS to rise, unless you are compressing the water itself; it has nowhere else to go.
TL;DR: Dan was right, making the boat more dense (by putting stuff into it without making the boat itself bigger) leads to an increase in water level because now a higher percentage of the boat is submerged.

This was fun, and a nice 2h distraction. If at least one person sees this, reads the TL;DRs, and is somewhat smarter for it, I am already happy.

Bonus meme:

That philosopher dude you talked about has no idea what the "laws of physics" are, if he thinks there are exceptions to them, probably because he does not know the difference between the objective reality of the universe and how it works, and our description / model for it. Maybe he didn't go deep enough into philosophy of science, or it's just been a while (which I cannot blame him for, I barely remember anything about quantum field theory because I haven't used it in over 5 years), but he said those things as if he did know what he was talking about, which was kinda sad.
The universe, as far as we know, seems to be perfectly consistent with applying its own rules, it's just that sometimes it looks like some rules don't have an effect, when in actuality they are just overpowered by other rules. The ideal gas law is an idealised model for a gas that DOES NOT EXIST IN REALITY that fits objective reality to a degree in some situations. There are exceptions in the application of our models, not in the laws of physics.

2020.09.21 06:50 aarongertler A Requiem for Ravnica

This was a tough year for Magic in many ways. Certain cards were too good. Certain tournaments were a bit samey.
But even a tough year of Magic contains a lot of good games and a lot of fun cards. And even if our enemies vanish with rotation, it is a bittersweet victory, because we lose some friends along the way.
This post, like my Requiem for Ixalan, is a requiem for what we've lost, and a "thank you" to the cards that shaped some of our most enjoyable moments.
We just lost a lot of sets, and I'm definitely going to leave out some cards here. Please record your own goodbyes in the comments!

Goodbye, Ravnica!

Ravnica may be the best plane in the game. So many of its sets and cards have been absolute heaters over the years. From Lightning Helix and Shadow of Doubt to Voice of Resurgence and Ruric Thar, the guilds and their warriors have defined the game for many of us. The latest block was no exception.
I'll start with the guilds, and hold the WAR and other monocolored cards until the end.
Goodbye, Azorius. Goodbye to Dovin, everyone's favorite three-drop white-blue planeswalker, who was almost close to good enough... twice, in two sets. Goodbye to Elite Guardmage, who... see "Dovin". Goodbye to Lavinia, who never really hung out with us -- but we'll still root for her as she takes on Force of Will and other nonsense in the big leagues. Goodbye to Deputy of Detention, exiler of 2/2 zombies and good friend to Yorion players everywhere. And goodbye to Dovin's Acuity, one of the more unexpected Mythic Championship superstars of the modern era.
Goodbye to Absorb -- a perfectly balanced lifegain control card, which turns out to be harder to make than you'd expect. Goodbye to High Alert (and its Rubenesque companions -- Senate Courier, Resolute Watchdog, Humongulus, and all the rest). Goodbye to Unbreakable Formation, which wins the "wait, that was an Azorius card?" award for this block. And goodbye to Dovin's Veto, which I've awarded the Azorius MVP trophy after Teferi was banned from the league for breaking the rules of the game.
Goodbye, Boros. Goodbye to Feather -- who inspired one of the all-time great MagicTCG preview threads, and actually lived up to the hype (unlike certain boar gods I could name).
Goodbye to Deafening Clarion; people laughed at your lifelink, but it won many a game nonetheless. Goodbye to Aurelia, a four-mana ball of stats who hung on to relevance for longer than I expected. And goodbye to Tajic, beloved friend and mentor, who died in a clarion accident (leaving behind a wife and four children, who took no damage).
Goodbye to Chance for Glory, one of the worst cards ever to end up in rank 1 mythic at the end of a season. Goodbye to Legion Warboss -- you were no Goblin Rabblemaster, but we loved you for who you were, and for the main-phase bugfix in Arena that should be named after you. And goodbye to Justice Strike; we'll see you later in Tier 3 Historic, as you make Phyrexian Obliterator players wish they had never been born.
Goodbye, Dimir. Goodbye to Lazav, and the endless closet full of Halloween costumes they've been using to impersonate dragons and angels and Elder Giants.
Goodbye to Doom Whisperer, one of the best unplayable five-drops of all time, and to Nightveil Predator, which was somehow just a little bit more playable than Doom Whisperer. Speaking of nigh-unplayable fancy flying creatures: Goodbye to Dream Eater! And to Thief of Sanity, best of the bad bunch, and a worthy update to my old favorite creature, Dimir Cutpurse. But the biggest trap card of them all, of course -- no contest, really -- was Unmoored Ego (farewell!). They are all bad but I love most of them anyway.
Goodbye to Narcomoeba, Discovery/Dispersal, Mission Briefing, and especially Drowned Secrets, which teamed up to create a self-mill deck that was exactly as powerful as those decks ought to be. I picture them hanging out in a bar and watching their friend Creeping Chill destroy aggro decks on a TV that shows only Twitch streamers playing Modern leagues. And goodbye to a BUNCH of other sweet uncommons, as powerful as the rares and mythics weren't -- Thought Erasure, Sinister Sabotage, and Disinformation Campaign (which held the short-lived title of "most obnoxious draft uncommon in recent memory" until Zenith Flare came along).
Goodbye, Golgari. When Magic was about grinding, you ground better than anyone. Goodbye to Golgari Findbroker and to Find/Finality -- I wish I'd had more time with you before they printed Nissa. Goodbye to Molderhulk, which lost Memorial to Folly early in its career and never recovered. Goodbye to Status/Statue -- likewise dependent on a Dominaria card which left it behind. Goodbye to Assassin's Trophy, which turned out beautifully -- like Rotting Regisaur, a combination of ridiculous upside and horrific downside that wound up perfectly balanced. And goodbye to Kraul Harpooner, slayer of geese.
Lastly, goodbye to Vraska, Golgari Queen, one of the best-designed planeswalkers of all time, not least because she turned many of the most irritating planeswalkers of all time into lifeless rock. I wish I'd had more chances to cast you, my friend. See you in Cube.
Goodbye, Gruul. Goodbye to Domri, who may have the best record of any planeswalkerat getting cool, well-designed cards that are fun but not overpowering. I'd say I'm curious about what the next version will do, but... well, he died. Anyway, goodbye to Ravager Wurm, which could kill Castles and Triomes but cost one mana too much to ever actually do those things in a major tournament. Goodbye to Cindervines -- like Vraska, you weren't flashy, but you killed so many of the worst things in Standard and you did it with a smile. Goodbye to Skaargan Hellkite, the packaged baloney to Glorybringer's Christmas ham -- not as tasty, but sometimes you just need to make a sandwich. And goodbye to Collision/Colossus, the original Embercleave.
I'll also say farewell to Riot, one of my favorite recent mechanics -- it was well-powered for Limited and Constructed. And while Rhythm of the Wild couldn't live up to the hype, and Zhur-Taa Goblin was always a bit mopey, I will always go to bat for Gruul Spellbreaker, the absolute Platonic ideal of an aggressive three-drop.
Goodbye, Izzet. Goodbye to Ral, Izzet Viceroy -- one of the last in a long line of planeswalkers with the same text written in different words. I'll miss those innocent days when "plus one, draw a card" was Standard-playable text on a five-drop. Goodbye to Niv-Mizzet, Parun, which was exactly powerful enough to justify its ridiculous mana cost and somehow remained a relevant threat until the very end. Goodbye to Crackling Drake and Goblin Electromancer, worthy squires to Syr Arclight Phoenix -- and of course, goodbye to Phoenix, which had very big shoes to fill and did so with ease. May you someday darken the skies of Modern once more, you wonderful bird.
Speaking of constructed all-stars, can we pour one out for the fact that one of the best monored Standard decks of all time owed its power not to Boros, Gruul, or Rakdos, but instead to the least aggressive of the red guilds? I lost to you both many a time, but now we can let bygones be bygones -- so goodbye, Runaway Steam-Kin and Experimental Frenzy.
And of course, there were instants and sorceries! Goodbye to Ionize, which formed a perfect pair with Absorb to ask: "What kind of blue mage are you?" Goodbye to Quasiduplicate; it's hard to stick out in a lineup of Clone variants, but you were one of the good ones. Goodbye to Risk Factor, which was never very good but was always delightfully weird. Goodbye to the butter-smooth Radical Idea, the rock-solid Chemister's Insight, and the brilliant Beacon Bolt -- which zapped many a Krasis out of the sky.
And also -- goodbye to Expansion/Explosion, my wife's favorite card in the block. She's going to miss casting Fling for 30 damage instead of 15.
Goodbye, Orzhov. Goodbye to Kaya, Orzhov Usurper -- delightfully versatile role-player and sniper of a thousand Uros. Goodbye to Seraph of the Scales, which met the same sad fate as Doom Whisperer but was a sweet design nonetheless. And goodbye to Ethereal Absolution, which singlehandedly murders most of the decks I've ever loved to play.
Goodbye to Kaya's Wrath; Shatter the Sky is cold comfort when Godless Shrine players used to have the real thing. Goodbye to Mortify, worthy adversary to four-mana enchantments, and to Basilica Bell-Haunt, oppressive nightmare to one-mana creatures (not that I mind). And goodbye to Tithe Taker -- if we'd only had a few more Death and Taxes cards that good, we could've had a real deck!
Goodbye, Rakdos. Goodbye to Judith! You were overrated, but when all the hype faded, what remained was a solidly playable aggro legend. I wish you'd had more to do in your time. Goodbye to Rakdos and Captive Audience -- two unplayable cards, two unforgettable designs. Goodbye to Theater of Horrors -- alongside Golgari Findbroker and Thief of Sanity, you remind me of a simpler time, before I started having to write "card advantage" with scare quotes.
And goodbye to Spawn of Mayhem; every time someone casts you in Historic, I have to stop and remind myself that you still somehow cost only three mana. I imagine you turning to Gruul Spellbreaker and giving her one of these handshakes ("respectable muscles!").
Goodbye to Bedevil, one of those role-players that keeps Standard humming along without calling attention to itself. Goodbye to Drill Bit, my favorite Thoughtseize variant in quite some time. Goodbye to Skewer the Critics and Light Up the Stage; I never liked you much, but I respected you both. Goodbye to Rix Maadi Reveler, who I both liked and respected.
And of course, goodbye to Carnival/Carnage, the perfect split card for all occasions.
Goodbye, Selesnya. Goodbye to Trostani and Emmara, the all-around strongest pair of legends in any guild this time around. You were both sweet and flavorful, and I wish we'd had more chances to build big boards together.
(Someday, I might get some other paper boomers together and run tournaments in Ravnica block Standard with all the silly cards banned from the beginning -- there's so much to love here!)
Goodbye to FloweFlourish -- I always drew you on exactly turn four, and it always sucked, but I appreciate how good you were for so many others. Goodbye to Huatli's Raptor, the Yoshi to Pelt Collector's Mario. And goodbye to Knight of Autumn, one of the best-designed cards in the entire block; I hated to see you destroy my Lucky Clovers, but I had to smile in appreciation nonetheless.
Convoke is one of my favorite mechanics, and this block did it justice. We had one sweet bomb that almost got there, one clean role-player, and one archetype-defining monster that was powerful but never broken. Goodbye to you all!
Goodbye, Simic. Some of your citizens did some very bad things, but it would be wrong to blame that on Prime Speaker Vannifar, a wonderfully silly Johnny card that saw fringe play all throughout its run. Or Biomancer's Familiar, which I still hope to break in Historic someday. Or Biogenic Ooze, which was equally fun in fair bad decks and unfair bad decks. Or, hell, even Neoform, which sees play in several broken decks but can't really be blamed for any of them.
Also, Simic gave gave us Incubation/Incongruity, the balanced version of Once Upon a Time, which I played far more than I should have (while whiffing as often as I deserved to).
And then we have one of my all-time favorites, the card I'll always have to pull my mouse away from in Cube drafts when I'm in Mardu -- Frilled Mystic. Your departure is expected, but unwelcome.
Remember Growth-Chamber Guardian? Remember Incubation Druid? Adapt was incredibly sweet! It even gave us a card that didn't exist solely to make control decks miserable, in the form of Pteramander -- trans-rights icon and Mythic Invitational champion.

And goodbye to all the rest:
And now, in WUBRG order across the three sets:
What do you miss, now that rotation is upon us? What requiem will you write?

2020.09.21 00:52 500scnds [Table] I made a free alternative to Photoshop, that is used by 7 million people. Ask me Anything!

Source Guestbook
Questions Answers
I understand that people are always hesitant to answer this very specifically, but I'm always curious - given 7 million visitors, what your ballpark profit? And what's the ratio of the profit-to-expenses, which I assume is mostly server hosting costs as a one man operation? Most of my profit comes from ads. I make around 5 cents for every hour someone spends in Photopea (on average). In 2019, people spent 5 million hours working in Photopea, so I made around $250,000. I hope it could be 2x to 4x more this year :)
Photopea runs completely in your computer (after loads, you can disconnect from the internet and use it offline). I use only a file hosting, for which I pay around 50 USD a year.
the below is a reply to the above
How is that possible to only pay 50 USD/year when you get ~7 million people in a month and your site is 1.8mb. That's around 12tb/month. I don't know of any host willing to do 12tb of data for $50/12 I don't understand it either :/ I will ask my hosting provider.
the below is a reply to the above
Don’t! :) I already did :)
the below is another reply to the original answer
I'm glad you have a subscription option. As a policy I don't turn my adblocker off, but I'll totally subscribe as your rates are quite reasonable! If you're around and don't mind answering, how many subscriptions do you have? There are hundreds of people paying for Premium :) so about 0.01% of all users :)
the below is another reply to the original answer
How much do you think you're losing out because of adblockers? It is hard to tell, maybe between 10 to 40 percent :/
the below is a reply to the above
You should implement a donation feature as well, to offer more ways for users to support you. People can already order a Premium. I think it is better to get something in return (removing ads), so anybody who wants to support us can do it :)
First of all, thank you for making a great alternative. My question is, how would you compare Photopea to The Gimp in terms of features and interface? The interface of Photopea is closer to Photoshop than GIMP (so it is more comfortable to Photoshop users). I think all you can do in GIMP you can do in Photopea, but with a different workflow. You can open GIMP files (XCF) in Photopea.
There are many advanced features in Photopea, that are not in GIMP. The most important is probably the full support of a PSD format.
the below is a reply to the above
Have to confess I'd never heard about this software until reading your post, but your mention of the PSD feature makes me want to check it out immediately. I admire your determination, dedication, and skills. Thank you :)
the below is a reply to the above
Does it support vectors better than Photoshop? I don't like how limited it is in Photoshop. Even illustrator is annoying Photopea can open SVG and PDF images better than Photoshop. Just try it!
the below is a reply to the grandparent
Thank you for your program. I use it to make memes and do photoshopped things! You are welcome! I am happy that Photopea is useful to you :)
How did you learn how to make software? I was interested in computers since I was 14. I was studying computer science at the university between 18 and 25 years of age.
I studied theoretical computer science at the Charles university in Prague. Finishing the university was probably the hardest thing in my life (I do not enjoy learning as much as I enjoy creating stuff). But I also think it was the most valuable and productive part of my life and I am very proud of it :)
Here to say I've been using it, maybe the only white listed site on my ad-block. What was the hardest part to implement? The advanced foreground selection was quite hard. It is used e.g. in MagicCut. I wanted to reach the quality of (where you pay $2 per image), but it still does not work that well.
Anyway, I think MagicCut works better than all other free tools and many commercial tools, so it can save you a lot of money :)

You should look at U-2 Net a recently released paper with code that has amazing results I know quite a lot about this research :) The problem is, that people use Photopea for free, so it would have to run on their computers. They would have to download a 200 MB network, and unless they don't have a $2000 GPU, they would have to wait for hours to do such foreground / background detection.
the below is a reply to the above
From the paper: "To facilitate the usage of our design in computation and memory constrained environments, we provide a small version of our U2-Net, called U2-Net† (4.7 MB). The U2-Net† achieves competitive results against most of the SOTA models (see Fig. 1) at 40 FPS." Unless there's something similar but better or they're outright lying, 4.7 MB sounds like an extremely reasonable memory footprint and it's pretrained so nobody's going to max out their GPU. You might want to give it another look. Wow, that sounds great, I will put it into my issues:
the below is a reply to the grandparent
Not 100% sure, but a GPU is needed to train the network (which can take hours) and the trained networks usually do things in seconds or even faster. Users would still need to download the network, but it wouldn't be very computationally expensive. Such trained network can process the input in seconds on the GPU. If you process the input of the network on a CPU (even with multiple cores), it can take minutes or even hours. And training on a CPU can take weeks :)
I use Photopea regularly when developing web sites. I don't have to fire up my VM or limit myself to GIMP or Krita. The third most popular tech magazine in the Czech Republic, Letem světem Applem, was developed with the help of your tool. Díky! My question: will you ever open-source Photopea, at least partially? Hi, thanks a lot!
A huge part of Photopea is open-sourced and available at
the below is a reply to the above
I'm scared to even open that repo 😂. What hosting provider are you using that can handle 5 million users in a year? I have a local hosting provider from the Czech Republic. It is just distributing HTML, CSS and JS files (no server-side computations like PHP or SQL databases), so it is not that hard.
Hi! Two questions 1. Does photopea have support for RAW photo files of varying cameras? (.ARW for example) 2. Why do you think Adobe charges so much for their platform when your model is clearly fairly simple to produce (if one person can do it alone) and functions profitably? Hi! Yes, Photopea can open .DNG, .CR2, .NEF and .ARW files :)
There are programs that are much more expensive than Adobe products :) It is hard to tell, but I think it is because there are no reasonable alternatives, or the alternatives are not known very well.
the below is a reply to the above
As a Fuji user, .RAF support coming at some point? Hi, the .RAF format was invented by Fuji and has never been publicly described anywhere. I tried to ask Fuji to provide a description of their format, so that I can implement it into Photopea, but nobody replied :(
I think Fuji does not want you to open their files in any other software than their software.
the below is a reply to the above
I don't think fuji has their own editing software, most people use either Capture One or Lightroom, or Irident X-Transformer to convert into a DNG Photopea can open DNG without any problems :) but it is a real pity they don't store it in DNG directly.
I just discovered this software and it is bloody amazing. As a hobby animator, I'm wondering - Do you have any plans, or have you at least thought about, making an animation software in the same way you have achieved this? Something like Adobe Flash/Animate or Toon Boom Harmony. (I'm already sold on your idea for a video editor, since Davinci Resolve's free version has NEVER been able to render videos for me without crashing) There is a distinct lack of reasonably priced animation software that achieves nearly as much as these two ridiculously expensive subscription programs, without sacrificing something really important to animation. The closest thing to achieving what Animate or Harmony has is Blender's new 2d animate mode, and even then, you have to sacrifice convenient features like easy tweening. An alternative free (or one-purchase) animation software would make me - and so many other people happy. Now that I know this software exists, I'll be sure to donate to its production. Thanks! You are not the first one asking for this :) I wish I could make so many tools, but I am afraid my life is too short for all that work :D
If I manage to make a good team of programmers in the future, I would love to make such animation software.
Is there a comprehensive guide I can find for all the tools in photopea? I’m new to photo editing and still confused by the interface. Photopea is an advanced editor and it is hard to learn simply by using it. I wrote a manual here: .
the below is a reply to the above
You made documentation? What kind of unholy programmer from the abyss are you? Don’t let our bosses find out or we’re screwed. I made it after several years of explaining people how to do things in emails, etc :) Now, I can simply send them links to my documentation. It took me less than a week :D
I love using photopea! I open it almost daily. Is there a way to review the source and contribute pull requests? Have you thought about providing an offline or self-hosted release? Thanks! The open-source parts of Photopea are published on our GitHub: . We provide a self-hosted versions for money, as it needs to be updated regularly.
How would you compare it to photoshop? Photopea has about 90% of features of Adobe Photoshop, but there are some features of Photopea that Photoshop doesn't have (e.g converting PDF, SVG, Sketch, XD, Figma to layered PSD documents).
Also, only Photoshop and Photopea fully support the PSD format, so I think Photopea is the best alternative to Photoshop at the moment.
the below is a reply to the above
What do you think about GIMP? GIMP is great, but it can not work with PSD files properly. Also, the interface is quite different from Adobe Photoshop, and it is hard to use for former Photoshop users.
Do you pronounce it photo-pea, or photo-pee-ah? I pronounce it Photo-pea, but most of people pronounce it photo-pee-ah.
It is probably the most asked question in our subreddit :) /photopea.
EDIT: I did a quick search and here is what I found :)
the below is a reply to the above
Good to know I got its pronunciation right :D I like photos and I like peas. What made you call it photopea? I wanted it to be PhotoSomething, and I wanted a domain . Most of domains were occupied, until I found Pea :)
Not a question, but I just want to put this out there for all the non-developers, but the fact that Photopea was created by a single programmer is absolutely astounding. As a developer myself, I cannot fathom the productivity of this developer nor have I ever met someone that could be this productive. Teams of 10-20 developers could not match the functionality and feature list of photopea. And actually, here is a question after all, have you ever recorded or livestreamed yourself coding? I'm having a hard time imagining the pace required to be this productive. Do you have an estimate of the number of hours you have put into this? Hi, thanks a lot! I think I put between 15 000 and 20 000 hours into Photopea :) I never recorded myself programming, but most of it is just staring into the wall thinking, opening Youtube or Reddit from time to time (to "relax" a bit), and I writing code once in a while :)
Any chance your program can export files to work with a cnc machine? Sure, just tell me what format does that machine accepts? Is than an open format? Can you use e.g. an SVG?
Manufacturers often create their proprietary formats to make you dependent on their software.
the below is a reply to the above
G-Code is pretty common, although I'm unsure as to what Z-axis information you would capture in an image format unless it was texturized somehow and interpreted that as topography? Maybe like the color coded images to show 3 dimensions in a planar view. I know lasewaterjet cutting and similar that do 2D operations typically ask me for a DXF file or equivalent. I've never used Photopea for this (or even tried) but typically I take a vector format and import into CAD software to generate a DXF for this purpose. I know my media guy can never get me a format I need to import a logo and such for mechanical design. A DXF or similar vector would be amazing if it doesn't exist already. Hi, would you be able to write this into our GitHub? . And most importantly, would you be able to discuss it there with me, if I have any questions? I never worked with any CNC machine.
Hi !! Can I know about your backend ? There is a webhosting which stores one HTML, one CSS and several JS files. Photopea is written in Javascript and runs completely in a computer of the visitor.
the below is a reply to the above
Have you used any frontend frameworks? No, I wrote my own Javascript, HTML and CSS. I usually prefer to use what I know, instead of learning how to use new tools :)
the below is another reply to the original answer
How do you handle users that pay for premium? There must be some sort of database right? Yes, there is a database. I just wanted to say, that out of these 7 million people, the database is needed maybe for a hundred of them.
the below is another reply to the original question
Not without dinner first Take my upvote, too :)
Are there any new browser features or HTML features that will make your code a lot simpler? I would love if browsers let Photopea know, when Ctrl+T was pressed on the keyboard. People have been using the Ctrl+T shortcut in Adobe Photoshop for decades and almost every week, someone asks why it does not work in Photopea.
At the moment, when you press Ctrl+T in any browser, it opens a new tab (panel), and a we can not do anything about it :( I have been personally arguing about it with browser developers for over five years.
"Fighting" with browser developers is quite a big part of my work, which is quite sad :(
the below is a reply to the above
When in fullscreen Ctrl+T works in both Chrome and Edge, it triggers the transform tool. Maybe prompt the user to switch Photopea to fullscreen ? The website feels like a standalone app so it makes sense to get rid of the browser UI anyway. I think the Ctrl+T should be usable even when not in the fullscreen mode.
the below is another reply to the original answer
I'm sure you must've researched this thoroughly over the years but maybe stackoverflow seems to have a couple good answers on disabling new tab shortcut keys. Maybe have a look? Esp these 2: 1 - - you could make your own extension and then make that extension do the "Free Transform"? 2 - I'm no good at js but maybe have a look... I guess I could also just make my own web browser and ask users to install it :D
How about a Desktop version? That'd be great! You can go to and press More - Install Photopea. It will add an icon to your homescreen, which will start Photopea without the browser UI. But it works only in the latest Chrome, Edge and Opera.
the below is a reply to the above
What Api does that? Seems chromium only but i wouldn't care. Never heard of that. It is called PWA - progressive web apps, and the app can trigger the installing process
What are your plans for the video editor, and how can I keep up to date on its progress? (video editor here that loves what you did with photopea) I do not have any specific plans about the video editor yet. You can follow Photopea on Facebook or Twitter to know about the progress (links in my original post) :)
You mentioned your income is through ads. Have you thought of other avenues for revenue sources or ways to increase your current revenue even more to be able to hire more employees? Yes, I have thought about it, but I don't know about any ways, which could work better than ads.
Most of the current Photopea user can not afford to pay for the software, so I don't want to make half of features available only after the payment.
the below is a reply to the above
Would a premium version that's identical in features but without ads be an option? Unless this is already a thing? It is already a thing :) You can hide ads for $10 for three months. Also, there is no subscription, you pay manually any time you want. Ads come back once it runs out :)
What things does Photoshop do better than your alternative? Photoshop can open almost all RAW image formats (in their Camera Raw program). I think Adobe pays the camera manufacturers, so that they allow Adobe to open raw files from their cameras.
At the moment, Photopea can open only four RAW formats, which cover around 80% of the market.
Do you think that photopea has been a success? I use it for work everyday and I certainly think it is! I think it is the most useful thing I made in my life so far, so it is a success :)
Good stuff. Love a free image editor. Why is this already on the front page, with just 6 comments and 22 points? I don't know much about the Reddit algorithm, but I think it is also about how old the post is. E.g. if you get 20 points in 5 minutes, you will be on top of a post, which received 50 points in an hour.
What's your favourite video game? Also thank you the amount if complete trash I have cropped using photopea is immeasurable I received my first computer when I was 13 and PC games seemed too complicated to me (and most of them were in English, which I did not know well). I never had a playstation or a gameboy. So I never played video games much.
The first game I "understood" and truly enjoyed playing was Serious Sam :) I also spent A LOT of time playing Clash of Clans.
Will it stay free or is there a possibility that you're gonna put a price on that? Photopea has been free to use since the first release seven years ago, and I would like to keep it free to use in the future, too.
Love photopea, I use it all the time! Does anyone trouble you with any legal issues since it's basically an online photoshop? Thanks! I think the similarity of the interface of Photoshop and Photopea (and other photo editors) is a good thing. Imagine if each brand of computers had a different layout of a keyboard, because they wanted to be "different". I am very happy, that I can simply take any keyboard and start typing on it right away.
Maybe one time someone will come and say, that we have to make the background red, because the dark grey color is already used in their program. And we have to rename the Brush tool to "hair on a stick tool", because the Brush tool is already used in their program. But I hope such time will never come :D
the below is a reply to the above
Please make an April 1st version with copyright-friendly tools, that would be awesome. Brush – Hair on a stick Bucket – Metal container Move – Relocate and so on. Edit: April Tools’ Day That is a graet idea! :D
How do you approach creating something that is intuitive? How do you know that your logic is universally understood? Are there any examples of tools, tasks, icons that you have had to change based on feedback? Thank you and great work! The user interface of Photopea has been evolving for seven years and there were probably hundreds of suggestions from users, which I listened to and modified, to get what we have now :)
Hi Ivan, I've used Photopea for a couple of years for basic editing. Congratulations - it's an amazing tool. The only feature that prevents me from upgrading to a paid version is the font selection interface. There are far too many fonts available, they load slowly, are all obscure and not represented well in preview. Would you consider curating/refining the available fonts? Hi, thanks! It is completely fine to use Photopea for free, you don't have to pay for Premium :)
You can mark some fonts with a star, and then, you can display only the "starred" fonts. You can use filters to see e.g. only "sans" fonts and hide "comic" or "handwritten" fonts. You can enable Latin-1 and other language categories, to see only fonts with many letters (only professional fonts support more than 200 letters).
Have you experienced any pushback/pressure from the bigger players? No :) I have been in touch with people from Google, Adobe, Corel, Canva and other companies, evrybody was very friendly and helpful :)
Thanks for making Photopea- I'm certainly loving it. Will there ever be an offline version? Hi, thanks!
A big challenge is, that Photopea can not use fonts from your computer, and it downloads fonts from our server, when you choose to use that font. So changing fonts would not work in an offline version (except of a couple of fonts we could pre-store).
I think the amount of time people spend using their computer offline is decreasing, and will be almost zero at some point :)
the below is a reply to the above
If I use a font I have purchased, is it easy to implement, if you don't have that font on your server? Hi, just press File - Open in Photopea to load a font (TTF or OTF file) :)
Do you plan to keep photopea solely browser based? Many people think that browser programs are slower or "less capable" than desktop programs, but it is not true in the last five years. So a "download and install" version of Photopea would not have many advantages.
I could provide an offline version of Photopea, but at the moment, most of money come from ads, which would not work offline :/
the below is a reply to the above
You can try and make an Electron app, I know its essentially a browser but it would give that "native" feel to users. Hi, you can already press More - Install Photopea in Photopea and use it as a PWA :)
Great. Now can we please start working on a viable PDF editor that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars per year? Photopea can already do it to some degree :) have you tried it?
The PDF format was not meant to be edited further. But we are improving.
Thanks for developing Photopea. After your last AMA, I started using it. Is there a way for size of a new document to default to image dimensions on the clipboard? That's one of the handiest things in Photoshop so you don't have to either enter manually or overguess then crop down later. The size of a new document should be set by default to the dimension of the content of the clipboard.
But it works only in Chrome, Edge and Opera. Firefox did not implement the necessary standard yet. Don't know about Safari :/
You mentioned you plan on making a video editor. Have you considered an Illustrator alternative as well? Photopea already has many vector-related capabilities. It can open, edit and save SVG and PDF files. Somehow, I feel like a video editor would be more fun to make than an advanced vector editor.
the below is a reply to the above
Didn't know it supported editing SVGs. How does it compare to something like Inkscape? The interface is a lot different than Inkscape. Just try it and see how it works :)
I know this is a long shot, but any chance I can join on board with little to no knowledge so I can learn (for free of course)? 😁 It could be doing menial tasks for all I care. If not, any advice for someone like me wanting to change career path and code? I'm just tired of what I've been doing so I just recently starting some online coding courses but would like to learn more hands on if possible. Hoping to change career path for the future. Well, if I spend time teaching you, I will have to invest less time into developing Photopea :D
I have been often tired of what I did, I get tired of Photopea-related work from time to time. There is not just a bad job and a good job, there are many things in between. But whenever you have to choose between a simple goal and a hard goal, don't be afraid to go for a hard goal :)
How did you begin to scale up the workforce? What positions did you prioritise and how did the recruitment process go? I'm in an early process of starting up a web application and can see it being difficult going from working alone on a project to trusting people to share the same determination to grow it. Thanks I do not have any team, I still work on Photopea alone.
Hi. Great stuffs. I will definitely give it a try soon. May I give a suggestion ? I use GIMP for Image editing since I usually have to make some illustrations for my work. And GIMP provides me with the function of adding Text from another format, like LaTeX (to write math formula). Do you think this would be possible to implement in your app ? Hi, is the LaTeX text rasterized to pixels after you insert it? Or you can modify it in GIMP?
the below is a reply to the above
the LINUX version of GIMP has a module in the Render section which allows me to type in the LaTeX code and product an image of the formula. I am not really used to the terminology of image like vector or raster image. But once the formula is produced, it is not modifiable. So if I messed up, I have to redo the process from the beginning. We don't have such thing in Photopea at the moment.
I used to write my masters thesis in . You can also convert LaTeX to a PNG image here: (right-click the image - Copy Image, and paste it in Photopea).
Can it do animations? The only thing I use photoshop for at this point is it's animation ability, especially it's keyframe animations, where you can make a single frame last however many seconds you like. If it can do that, i can finally delete photoshop. Hi, we do not have such animation capabilities as Photoshop. But there is a special mechanism for making animations from layers:
the below is a reply to the above
This kind of animation capability is exactly what I was looking for. Does it allow you to view the animation as a preview before you choose EXPORT? Of course :) Just drag-and-drop a GIF into Photopea and try to export it as a GIF, it will take you around seven seconds :)
what was your eureka moment for photopea that whoa this is possible? Sometimes, when I learn about a new algorithm or a method, I wonder how elegant and ingenious it is :) Like - the person who came up with it should have been really smart, I wish I was also that smart :D
Have you considered using Patreon? Have you considered letting people subscribe for a fixed period if no ads? Hi, we already offer a Premium account, where you pay and it hides ads for a period of time. I know about Patreon, but I feel a bit uncomfortable about accepting money for nothing in return.
Is there a downloadable version available/in the works? You can go to and press More - Install Photopea, to get an icon to your homescreen.
i tried using it on my display tablet, there doesn't seem to be any pressure sensitivity? Hi, try to update your tablet (drivers, browser, os, etc). But it works on the latest iPad and on my old Android phone (it tracks the pressure of my finger). If it does not help, try to report it to the tablet manufacturer (as it will not work in any website, not just Photopea).
Is there support for sprite editing tools or just tools in general for game devs? Do you mean generating sprites, etc? It can do most of things Photoshop can do, but if you need something more, you can always suggest it here :)
What made you decide to create a free photo editor? It was just an experiment of analyzing PSD files in a browser. I gradually improved it. I did not want to make a photo editor during the first two years of work. But at some point, I realised - hey, it should not be that hard to make it into a photo editor.
How is this compared to GIMP? Hi, you can read this article:
But it is about Photopea from two years ago. Photopea improved significantly since then.
So is it WASM or just regular old JS + WebGL? I found this looking for a browser based alternative a while back and thought it was awesome, but the controls were a bit too advanced/inaccessible for my requirements. If you're serious about growing the dev team I'm a self employed engineer if you want to hit me up. I wrote only JS and GLSL (for GPU processing). I use three WASM libraries, which I did not make. Thanks for your offer, but I would like to hire someone I could work with in person.
I’ve been using photopea ever since your previous AMA a year ago. My question is: how often are do you AMA and how did it impact traffic to photopea? I did only three AMAs with about a year between them. The traffic grows by about 10 - 20%, which lasts for a day or two :)
How much time have you invested in creating this tool? Or what's your weekly time investment? I never measured it, but I think it is about the "regular" 40 hours a week.
Did you know most of what you needed before starting on Photopea or did you learn as you went along with adding new features? What unexpected difficulties presented themselves while working on Photopea? It is like I knew how to use a chisel, but I never carved a statue that big.
I learned many practical things (state-of-art algorithms etc), I used many things I learned at the university, which I thought I will never use :)
How do I start contributing to Photopea? What would you like to contribute with? You can help us find bugs or help beginners at our subreddit:
I hope this hasn't been asked, but why haven't you made a downloadable/fully offline version of your program yet? I know that as soon as you load the site you can use it offline, but there are times when people need to edit pictures without any internet connection at all. The online version makes it much easier to release new versions and do updates. I update Photopea about 30 times a week (with minor fixes).
Also, it feels a little uncofmortable to imagine, that someone is using a two year old version of Photopea and is cursing me because of some bug, which I already fixed, and I can not do anything about it at that moment :/
What technologies did you use to build this? I used Javascript and WebGL :)
It's really great that you're offering an alternative to Photoshop! I was wondering, what language or software did you use to write Photopea? I wrote my code in Javascript, but in my opinion, the language is not important at all.
The best language is the one you know how to use. Also, for me, it is important, that there is a way to execute my code fast, which is possible with Javascript in modern browsers.
[removed] Hi, you should not use Auto-translate, as we have a professional Swedish translation. Just press More - Language - Svenska. You can switch languages without restarting Photopea. should be in Swedish the first time you open it, if Swedish is set as your main language.
What's your End User Licensing Agreement looking like? How is this licensed? I like to know before end users start requesting such as im sure someone now wants to install this in a corporate environment... Photope works in your computer and it never sends any data outside your computer. It is just like buying the cheapest calculator and using it. You don't get a licence to use such calculator, the numbers that you enter into a calculator don't leave the calculator.
Our terms of service are here:
What's your opinion of the current state and direction of front-end development? I think I don't know much about it. I write my JS code in notepad and that code is precisely the code which runs in the browser of a user (without any modification). I did not change the way I develop webapps in the last six years.
the below is a reply to the above
Straight up Windows Notepad? Not notepad++ or Visual Studio Code or Atom or anything else??? I use Notepad++ :)
Are you planning in translating it? If so, I'd be glad to work on the italian version. Hi, it is already translated into 40 langauges, just press More - Language - Italiano :)
Hey Ivan, i'm very impressed by your work, but i'm an avid GIMP user. As you can imagine switching editors is always a hassle once you've got used to one. So can you give me some bullet points why it would be worth to switch from GIMP to Photopea? Thanks for the AMA! Hi, I think you should stay with GIMP, since you already know how to use it :) And if there is nothing specific you miss in GIMP, you probably don't need such features :)
Hey ivanhoe90 I noticed today that the pen tool behaves backward when clicking the second point and dragging. It's like the curve goes the opposite direction than anyone would expect. I almost filed a github issue on it but I just didn't have time. Is that a bug? Oh, I am very sorry, it is fixed now.
Hi, I wanted to know what's your story. That is your biography. And what did you study too get here? How did you get the idea for photopea? Hi, I gave a talk about it in France a year ago :)
DUDE! Your program saved me in the final semester of my Masters. I needed to upload images and I don't have a scanner so I used my phone and fixed the colour and tones in Photopea. Bless you for your hard work. I guess my question is what kind of cheese do you like? Thanks a lot! If you only knew how happy I am about such comments :)
I like all cheeses, as I think they are all amazing, each one in a different way.
I love this software and I use it daily, Every time I think to myself "I wonder if can also do" the answer has been yes. I love showing my co-workers this software while working in Citrix, it always blows people away that this works. Question: Any change of seeing a feature that doesn't automatically export local files to the download folder? I would love to select where I want to automatically save them or just save as > location (The google drive system already amazing though) It's that one minor thing that makes me end up with File(17).png Hi, thanks! The saving mechanism depends on the settings of the web browser. The browser usually handles the file saving the same way for all websites. So just change the browser settings - make the browser ask you about where you want the files to be saved (we can not do anything about it as a website).
Do you think Photopea can have more active users than Photoshop? And why? It is hard to tell. There are many features in Photoshop and other editors, which Photopea can not do. Even if Photopea has more active users, it does not mean it makes more money.
Well I'm 9 hours late and maybe it was already asked and answered, but if you feel like responding... do you have to recreate stuff like puppet warp or quick select from scratch? Like you have to go back and read some old white paper on the algorithm, and then sort of reinvent the wheel? Hi, that is correct, there are usually no free implementations of such algorithms, and if there are, they are not in Javascript or are not good enough :/
Actually, the Puppet Warp is based on a 2009 paper from Takeo Igarashi. I found a mistake in it and I wrote him an email, and it took me several emails to persuade him that he really made a mistake in his paper :) But many other authors refuse to look deep into papers they wrote a long time ago.
Who would you prefer Photopea being aquired by, and why? I don't know. I am not looking for an acquisition at the moment.
I'm getting into video editing. I'm a noob to photoshop and video editing. Are there any tools in this that can complement my video editing? I was thinking of being able to create custom graphics for the videos but what else are the capabilities? I dont know much about video editing, but you can use Photopea for photo editing. I think the more time you spend learning a tool, before actually using it, the less time you will spend in total (e.g. doing something by "trial and error" in 3 hours vs. learning it in 1 hour and doing it in 30 minutes, because you learned how to do it).
How were you able to acquire such a vast amount of knowledge about editors and programming? I studied programming at the university for many years. Learning how to use Photoshop or any other editor is easier, but still can take weeks or months.
the below is a reply to the above
I'm currently studying programming at uni too. Am I correct in assuming that the vast majority of the code for photopea is JavaScript since it's a web application? Yes, I wrote my programs in Javascript :) But I did not have any Javascript class ever in my life. I think the programming skills are not related to the knowledge of a specific programming language.
Could you comment on a bit? I don't quite understand why you're against using syntactic sugar. Especially let, const, and strict equality. I'm not claiming to be an expert at all, but most of these guidelines are in opposition to modern day JS practices. So I was just curious if you could elaborate on your decision making! I think it is up to you what you write. But I am used to writing as "simple" code as possible, and it just looks cleaner to me if you use "var" instead of let/const (and it has no impact on the speed).
[deleted] I think the knowledge is the most important. Also, it should be someone friendly, calm, rational, etc :D
Hey, I don't know if this has been asked before but since you have mentioned that Photopea can run offline after it's been loaded (meaning that there is no server backend), have you ever considered packing the app into a desktop app (e.g. with Electron or nw.js)? Hi, I think opening a website is faster and more comfortable than downloading and installing something. Also, the electron version would be hard to update (unless it is just an iframe with Photopea inside it).
Have you ever considered making Photopea into a mobile app? Hi, half of our users use Photopea on phones. It works quite well. If you look for "photopea" on Youtube, most of videos are recorded on phones.
My Reddit client doesn’t have a comment search feature, but have you considered bundling an electron version for people to download? Seems like a quick win, and even gets around ad blockers. Or if it’s a premium only offering, is just icing on the cake Hi, I was a bit lazy to maintain a separate version of Photopea. I don't see any advantages it would have over the basic version.

2020.09.16 02:52 Realkers A Creative Discussion on the Quarterback Situation

In an attempt to stir up something more substantial in how it relates to the current Jimmy discussion, I wanted to put forth some interesting ideas (involving Jimmy and not) so that we could simply think about the road ahead. The NFL is extremely hard to predict, but as fans of the 49ers, I believe we'd all like to examine the future and imagine those in which we win another Lombardi. I like the memes too, don't get me wrong, but I'm not a huge fan of the tiny whining posts. Let's try to make something with a little more meat to it.
Now, be warned. There will be extremely unpopular OPINIONS below. But, if you don't like hot takes, stay out of Real's kitchen. That's what I always say... or at least, I'm saying it now... okay, I won't say it again. Anyways, here we go.
Other Options - Part 1:
That's right, I said it. Here are things as I see it.
  1. We continue to play with Jimmy G at the helm. Look, this is NOT a doomsday opinion because we lost the opener, it's the way I've personally felt since last season. This guy isn't going to win a Super Bowl of his own volition. If we win a Super Bowl with him (I am agreeing that it's possible, by the way), it would ultimately in spite of his ability, not because of it. It's not as bad as having Trent Dilfer at QB, so if he can win one maybe Jimmy can too, but he's just simply not this out of the world potential talent that people once thought he could grow into. I am of the opinion that he essentially played at his cap at the end of 2017 when we thought that was his floor and believed he would grow tremendously.
The reality is... he's okay. He might even be the new Dalton line, to be honest. He's better than other starters in the league, but we also have probably the easiest starting QB job in the entire National Football League. Our team is fucking stacked at a lot of key positions. The QB here is asked to throw with a quick release in the short to intermediate range in fairly open lanes. This is often times due to Shanahan's WR philosophy of "one can be schemed into an open look, what matters more is what is done once the ball is in your hands."
Here are some of the other requirements of being the 49ers QB - do NOT take a sack if it can be helped, do NOT be inaccurate on these short range passes, and be smart enough to absorb this playbook. Compared to every single starting QB job in the league, it's less responsibility. The only exception MIGHT be the Titans and Tannehill's position, but only because their offense is far more rudimentary in it's application, largely because they have a Henry. It works for them, I'm not knocking the Titans at all, Shanahan's offense is just objectively more intricate. Now, be honest, even a guy like Gardner Minshew (who seems pretty good honestly!) is asked to do more than Jimmy is here. Jimmy often times struggles to meet those requirements (specifically, inconsistent accuracy) while excelling at his quick release, which ultimately doesn't matter if you aren't accurate, as well as his smarts. Jimmy is a smart guy, scoring 29 on the Wonderlic. Just how important is the Wonderlic for QB's? It's debatable. Lamar Jackson scored a 13. What isn't debatable is that counting Mahomes, the last 10 Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks — Tom Brady (33), Nick Foles (29), Peyton Manning (28), Russell Wilson (28), Joe Flacco (27), Eli Manning (39), Aaron Rodgers (35), Drew Brees (28) and Ben Roethlisberger (25) — had an average Wonderlic score of 29.6. I'd argue it's probably more important for one of the hardest playbooks in the league.
Now, IF this is the option, I think the absolute best way to go about it is to pay Jimmy in a bracket that makes us reach a sweet spot in between of paying a rookie QB and resetting the market for your franchise guy. I don't think the $27.5m average is worth it for ol' Jimbo even if the top tier QB's keep making more and more money. He simply doesn't belong in that category or conversation. I'm not sure what exactly this figure should be, but it is probably in the $19m to $25m range for a per year average, but obviously it all depends on a multitude of things (how much QB contracts continue to trend up, how far the cap drops and what it's at when you got to extend him, etc.) Currently, he's on the books for $23.8m this year, and $24.1 in 2021, and $24.2 in 2022. The ultimate idea here is that if we can't have an upper echelon QB, he should be paid less than he currently is, and that way we can at least try to stay stacked in as many positions as financially possible. At any higher a dollar figure, I'd have a tough time not thinking it'd be better to draft a kid that costs like $4m - $7m a year and going aggressive in free agency for years to come.
Other Options - Part 2:
Now, here's where it's actually actually gets real spicy boys, buckle up.
  1. If Rodgers wants to leave Green Bay, we're obviously the prime candidate and I'm highly interested even if it's only for a season or two. This would be one of, if not, the best team he's ever been on. Granted, he's probably gonna light it up this year and they'll just let Love rot on the bench behind him if they have to. Like brady, I don't think he'll leave until he's over the hill, if he does leave at all. Despite their apparent rift (Rodgers and Green Bay's management) they'll eventually trade bait Love and draft someone else to be the heir in a few years. Rodgers still has seasons (plural) of top 3-5 QB left in him, in my opinion. I'd bet a lot of chicken nuggets that he'd bring a Super Bowl to The Bay with this roster.
  2. If the Browns get smoked on Thursday and they initiate "Lose for Lawrence" protocol and ditch the sunk-cost fallacy due to the recent Arizona Cardinals successful model of doing so, I'd love to have Baker Mayfield. There, I said it. Hammer me for it, go ahead. Let me hear it - "Baker sucks!" "He's washed!" "What a trashcan!" "Can't pass to OBJ and Landry wtf is he gonna do here?!"
Ok, shut up and let me tell you.
I like this kid. I know his mentality/demeanor might not be your thing, but let me tell you one thing that might change your mind even just a little bit - it's not an act for him. The dude has a genuine and strong-willed belief that he can be the best. Despite the cliche, I think that (while it can manifest in many different ways) trait is borderline required to be "that guy" in the National Football League. Wilson, Mahomes, Lamar, they all do it different ways. Wilson through copious amounts of seemingly (but probably, not really) kinda fake "goodness" and miracle water sales. Lamar just has Mark Ingram say it all for him. Mahomes has his ketchup on steak swagger. If you want to compare Baker's demeanor to any current top QB, it's honestly probably Rodgers. Lots of people don't like Rodgers cause he's kinda an arrogant prick sometimes. Baker is similar. Regardless of how successful he has been so far and therefore can't back it up yet, that didn't seem to matter to Rodgers either when he said he'd make us regret not drafting him before he ever played a down in the league.
Now, onto his play. I watched this guy in person a couple of times while visiting my brother who was going to OU during Baker's reign. I think he's legit. His arm is actually pretty powerful (somehow this has become a flipped narrative on /nfl lately) and I've personally seen him overthrow a receiver that was slowing down because of a whistle (during Baker's windup so he let it loose anyways) uncorking an absolutely BEAUTIFUL 70 yarder. He sits low into his throw really naturally and, memes aside, the boy has a THICC rear end so he can really get down and generate power from below and through the hips like you're supposed to.
Here's the problem though - he's not playing well right now. Why? Well, part of it is his Alex Smith-esque cast of Duck Duck Goose OC's and HC's (I believe he set the record for the most changes this early in his career in the off season). I think another large part of it is the toxic football relationship he has with OBJ and attempting to feed him. That's just my opinion, but let's at least look at some stats. At OU, he was extremely accurate. 68.1%, 70.9%, and 70.5% in his 3 years there. That puts him in the same range as Drew "The Wild Midget" Brees and "The Sons of Drew Brees" (otherwise known as guys that aren't trusted to make hard throws, lol)
2019 Completion % Rankings Percentage
1. Drew Brees 74.3% (nuts)
2. Derek Carr 70.4%
3. Ryan Tannehill 70.3%
4. Jimmy Garoppolo 69.1%
5. Kirk Cousins 69.1%
... ...
31. Baker Mayfield 59.4%
  • Now, let's analyze this a bit. First of all, one of these guys is not like the other. Drew Brees. He pretty much consistently shits on everybody with 70%+ and the other top guys that year are usually a full couple of percent lower than him (been that way since like 2017). I'm not sure if it will be the same this year, but he's adapted with his age to continue to make even shorter, and more sure-fire throws. Brees is great.
  • Second of all, look at the rest of the names, any pattern here? These are all guys that are largely asked to do less, to varying degrees, than most QB's. They also have good run games. Carr has Jacobs with Gruden's offense, Tannehill with the Hulk in the backfield, us with Mostert and the Island of Misfit Toys, and Cousins with the Chef. Now, having the highest completion percentage doesn't necessarily mean they're the best QB (Jackson was #9, Mahomes was #11) but it is important.
  • Third of all, I would be willing to bet several burritos that Jimmy will not reach his 2019 completion percentage again in his career. His passing mechanics are regressing (or not improving, if you want to word it slightly less harshly) and his footwork especially is alarming, although you could indicate that he's not confident in his line, but it would also be slightly worrisome to say that he can't be trusted to make a mechanically sound pass if the line isn't perfect, so either way you look at it the mechanics are an issue. I'm willing to give him a pass on this until he at least gets a 2nd string Center back, though. It is frustrating though because he allegedly was improving in training camp, then we all saw the Cardinals game. Still, I'll give it a pass for now.
  • Lastly as it relates to this list, and I will yell it out for the people in the back: THE QB OF THE 49ERS UNDER KYLE SHANAHAN SHOULD BE AT THE TOP OF THIS LIST. Almost without compromise. This relates back to what a QB is asked to do here. Jimmy had some of the lowest "Average Intended Yards" of any QB in the league last season. I just thought that this thread by wafflehauss was pretty neat from Week 1 last season, because not much changed. To be clear, I'm not really ripping Jimmy here, I'm just trying to illustrate that we aren't pushing this guy to some unrealistic standards or anything. The starting QB job in SF is physically easier than most places, and there are a lot of advanced metrics that point to that. The completion percentage should always be nuts. With Jimmy's mechanical issues seemingly not improving, and the interior of our line not improving, his accuracy will continue to get worse and worse because he is not much of an improv guy and he definitely "feels" pressure. 3:10 here. His scrambling is... not natural and whether or not you want to blame that on his ACL that's fine, but regardless he resorts to completely fuckified tactics once the pocket gets a little dirty.
Other Options - Part 2 Continued:
Now, lets look at Baker's most recent game and analyze some of the problems there. Highlight link.
  • 2:20 – beautiful roll out and a laser to Landry with a great covered catch.
  • 2:59 – despite him seeming to trip on the dropback, Baker - frequently shows off a nice touch pass that he has. This one is wide open and “easy”, but he does it a lot. He really has a great ability to “drop” the ball into the receivers hands, especially on out routes.
  • 3:50 – this is a routine pass for him, and one that would be expected of him a lot on a team like ours. You could argue that there is some wasted movement in the dropback here, but I'd rather see a little waste than have him throw off the back foot whenever it isn’t necessary. He delivers the pass in stride. Don't misunderstand me here, this is not a remarkable throw or anything, I am merely pointing out that he performs the intricacies to success in our offense well.
  • 3:59 – off balance, but manages to set and deliver a ball with higher velocity than Jimmy is capable of. Here's proof of that. Baker has a cannon. Jimmy is not bad in this category, but Baker is in the top tier. I was slightly impressed by this one.
  • 5:44 – this is something I was gonna highlight further, but this is a great example of it. Baker has a great, stealthy handoff. This is something that helps sell your play action pass (which I'll get into in a second), but Chubb doesn’t even try to sell it and immediately puts his hands back up, but this isn’t something the secondary can see and therefore doesn’t matter too much as this isn’t a super long developing route. Baker shoots and throws a great pass into the small soft spot of the secondary near the numbers.
  • 5:55 – cool touch here by Baker despite the foot placement, and Njoku makes a great catch. I can’t tell if Young got to him and forced him a couple feet away from his desired trajectory or not in the slight time we can’t see on camera. If not, Baker could’ve placed this a lot better.
  • 6:12 – there is something wrong with Beckham to be dropping a crucial pass like this on 3rd down. He has even said himself that Baker’s velocity is an issue for him, but he didn’t even rocket this pass. 3 receptions for 10 targets in this game, I really hate the way they’re trying to force feed him. This is not an indictment against him specifically either as some of the passes Baker threw him were dogshit, I just don’t think he’s well used in this way for the Browns and these sorts of drops specifically aren’t Baker’s fault.
  • 7:34 – this, though, is entirely Baker’s fault. Ball wobbles a bit and he stared down Beckham through the whole route and gets the ball smacked down by one of the best in the game. This is part of what I mean by "Baker and OBJ's toxic relationship". Baker was honestly better without OBJ's stardom and was much better at spreading the ball around when it was him, Landry, and some decent receivers all around.
  • 8:26 – say what you want about this pass, but I liked that Baker thought “I can beat 36 right over his head”. I like throwing to your best receiver on 3rd and 7 WAY BETTER than checking down and getting 4 yards instead. His demeanor feeds into him making “gunslinger” (I know I hate it too) throws like this frequently.
  • 8:38 – he does it again here. Yeah, the Ravens are up 25 but their starting secondary is still on the field here, which is one of the best in the league. I like the soft spot throws here, and his arm allows him to do it.
  • 10:15 – he loads it up and misses Beckham here, should’ve been a score. I think all the purple scared him. A tiny display of his arm strength, though.
So, just a quick overview of that game. The Ravens are amazing and the Browns suck. This is known. I didn't watch the all-22, but I watched the game. Baker makes some pretty big mistakes and some pretty bad throws in it. I am willing to bet Shanahan could turn him into a star, though. Kevin Stefanski is... not in Kyle's stratosphere as a Head Coach or Playcaller, in my opinion.
Now, one other thing I wanted to point out is Baker's massive strength in play action, as this site shows, Mayfield's passer rating was 36.8 points better on pass attempts involving play action.
It continues with some neat numbers in reference to last season. “From Weeks 1-8, the Browns offense used play-action on only 26.6% of Mayfield’s dropbacks, which was 15th in the league. The Browns were 2-5 over the time period and struggled immensely on the offensive side of the ball. In contrast, from Weeks 9-12, the Browns offense has utilized play-action on 40.0% of Mayfield’s dropbacks, which is the most in the league, with a corresponding 3-1 record. Mayfield has posted the following statistics and ranks using the strategy:
  • 44 completions on 60 attempts (most)
  • 574 passing yards (most)
  • 4 touchdowns (T-2nd)
  • 15.2 completion percentage differential (8th)
  • 125.3 passer rating (9th)
Compare that to the 60% of dropbacks where play-action was not deployed over the same time frame:
  • 50 completions on 86 attempts (T-17th most)
  • 457 passing yards (23rd)
  • 4 touchdowns (T-8th)
  • 83.3 passer rating (17th)”
So, what's my overall point here? I ultimately didn't want to answer my take on the future of this team at the QB position with "LeTs JuSt GeT LaWrEnCe LoL" or something overly-homerish about Jimmy. I tried to think of a more legitimate and realistic answer, with a scenario that involves Jimmy and two that don't.
In conclusion, my point is this: I believe Baker Mayfield, at about 3.5 years younger than Jimmy G, could be his replacement, at a lower cost, for marginally to seriously improved production from the QB position on this team. I still believe Mayfield has star potential. I do not believe Jimmy does. I understand that many fans on /nfl and /browns believe he's a total bust, but I do not. He is nowhere near perfect, but I legitimately think he could be plugged into this exact offense (with a down year, just like Jimmy and Matt had) with more success than Jimmy will provide. Shanahan will be his new Lincoln Riley and revive him to great heights. I think the Niners should acquire him and cut bait on Jimmy if the opportunity were to present itself because the Browns decided that "Lose for Lawrence" is the better option than Mayfield.
  • I think Baker has a better arm than Jimmy.
  • I think Baker is smart enough to figure our offense out.
  • I think Baker can make the short and intermediate throws required more consistently than Jimmy.
  • I think Baker can perform even better than Jimmy in our already extremely prominent overall usage of the play action pass.
  • I think Baker can scramble a bit more naturally than Jimmy in a wonky pocket.
  • I think Baker is more capable of big plays that break the game open.
  • I think Baker can provide the moxie on offense that this team doesn't have when Deebo or Kittle aren't on the field (but regardless, having it come from your defacto leader is invaluable).
  • I think the 49ers could win a Super Bowl BECAUSE of Baker Mayfield, not in spite of him.
Now, you may downvote, but I hope instead you contribute with something substantial. Thank you for your time.
Edit: Spelling mistakes.

2020.09.05 15:55 overclock351 Is it just me or did the internet use to be more fun?

I've had this conversation a year ago with myself after browsing reddit and feeling nothing but bitterness afterwards.
I've taken steps to purge political content/sad things in general from my reddit feed (after all i am here to have fun) and i've deleted the mobile app.
I did this because i thought that reddit was the problem but the more i gravitate towards other websites the more it seemed that every community is filled with tension: From people avoiding to comment under certain things to people being extremely aggressive over petty/trivial stuff to people using social media to dialog about really complex issues.
For instance if we see twitter you have people defending KPOP idols (plz don't kill me) like if they are close relatives or i see people discussing political issues (which are extremely complex on their own) in 120 characters instigating nothing but hatred due to limited word usage and inability to fully express a thought generating tweets that feel too extreme on their own while someone's position on something may be a bit softer.
I am not sure but i remember a time when the internet was a lot more calmer and way less aggressive than today: internet felt like this place where people of the same community could share (even if in a slow and painful way) things and topics that where enclosed in certain communities: if you wanted to watch animation you went on newgrounds or some animator's website, if you wanted discussion about weird shit you went on the random board of some imageboard, if you wanted to discuss on a certain topic you had your enclosed forum (stepmania forum, zdoom forum, doomworld forum, some youtuber's forum etc...).
i think that the following things made the internet a fun place:
1) Past day internet was decentralized: Let's be real; today's internet browsing of the average person consists of browsing 4/5 websites or less all day (for me it's youtube, reddit non stop): decentralization would not make communities clash and would make everything calmer while centralization would mash ton of stuff in one website until the community starts focusing on certain things in a soulless way to appease to the hive-mind of the website itself (look at /all and just watch everyday what subs are on top).
2) Past day internet was a tool: connecting with point 1: 10/15 years ago every website served a specific purpose (various communities that talked about niche things). Nowadays you have social media websites that, if you have to explain their purpose, whatever you come up with is a loose fit
Facebook: You use this website to stay in touch with friends... but there are people that use it as a market place, a birthday reminder, an event tracker, a news aggregator (btw don't use social media platforms as news aggregators that's just unhealthy), a platform for getting the hot memes, a place where you can join groups with random people and god knows what.
Twitter: You use this website for micro-blogging... and for following trends, for getting twitter clout, for following decisions of important political figures (how the shit did this become a, for brands to act like people, for general shitposting etc...
Reddit:You both want to look at what other people are reading(visit /all) but also you don't want to (not visit /all) because you wouldn't get the full picture of reddit.
Instagram: i can't even make a purpose for this one... Is it a photo gallery? does it have an actual use?
3)Internet is now a mainstream technology: that's self explanatory: more people online -> more people having a platform -> more discussion on things that gets pushed to the extreme throwing fuel into petty issues and making serious issues trivial.
I have no idea if it's just me wandering with my mind or anything else (maybe the eyes that saw the internet for the first time 15/16 years ago aren't the same eyes of today or i am just getting less tolerant of things).
What do you think... am i wrong?
PS: sorry for the wall of text.

2020.09.01 03:54 GoKnightKnight I just need to vent for my own mental health - you don't have to read this

So it's been months since release and i have finished the game twice. I did not like the game. But what i dislike even more than the game is the assholes who think they're so above anyone else. I've been mauling over this for months and i have to write it down for my own mental state, just to put it out there and hopefully find peace. If you loved the game i envy you, please tell me more about it. If you hated the game i hope that you can find peace, especially if you were a big fan of the first one.
The game: i think it's an average story at best told the wrong way. I was really into it for the first half of Ellie's journey until it dawned on me that i had nothing but pain and suffering to look forward to. Some people on this sub summed it up perfectly, it's misery porn. The game is a long long looong dark tunnel and the light at the end of it is dim and flickering. There's a few light moments here and there, mainly when you're roaming the world, but story wise there's only Ellie's birthday flashback that managed to put a smile on my face. Imagine that, smiling while playing a game. We all knew Joel was gonna die, and he died brutally which as much as it pains me to say it: it make total sense to me. He lived brutally and died the same way, and yes to me he achieved redemption and deserved better but Neil wanted us to hate someone so we would hunt them down and TO ME it made sense. How Joel came upon Abby's group and all didn't, you guys said it a 1000 times but i'm kinda over it, it's a story and they needed to somehow move forward with it so i can understand even tho i agree with you all that it could have been done better. Here's where it gets funny, Neil managed what he set out to do a little too well, now i hate Abby with everything i have which makes her half of the game a pain in the ass even tho i have to tell you, her half is better than Ellie's. It's more fun gameplay wise and she got the best horror levels in the game. I throught the relationships Abby had with her friends, Yara and Lev were incredibly under cooked especially with Lev. It's pretty clear they tried to recreate what Joel and Ellie had but instead of taking months crossing the US they just threw their relationship in the microwave and put that shit on blast hoping that it would come out perfectly baked like the relationship Joel and Ellie had in the first game. Finally the ending: it's not working for me. After all this misery Abby gets to live. I understand what happened, a lot of people have their take on it, i read a lot of opinions, but it just doesn't work FOR ME. I just felt like it was the final kick to the balls from the story to make you spare Abby and be powerless in the decision.
Some characters:
Abby: she tortured and killed Joel, i'm supposed to hate her and i do. The game then set out to do something pretty bold: make ME forgive her. I could not do it. I understand why she did it but the fact remain that 7 years ago one of the best game of our generation came out and it made me love 2 fictionnal characters very much. I replayed the first game many times over the years both on ps3 and ps4. And here i am forced to play as the killer of one of my favorite game protagonist ever. It made most of my play time with her a pain in the ass and in turn it soured the whole experience for me. They tried to mirror Joel with her character but again it felt undercooked. And just to be clear: i know it's very popular here to question and joke about her physique but i actually liked it. The very limited fun i had in this game was in part due to her being swole and punching motherfuckers left and right. I loved that.
Ellie: oh babygirl. You went through some shit. All i wanted was for Joel to swoop in and tell her that everything was gonna be alright but this ain't this kinda game bruv. I question some of her behavior like going after Abby instead of going to help Tommy with Jesse after she heard he was in a tough spot. Her refusing Joel's help during the party and calling him names when he's supportive just left a bad taste in my mouth.
Tommy, Dinah, Jesse and Yara: you guys are the real MVP ! (Even tho i would have appriciated if Yara didn't save Abby)
Lev: same as Abby mirroring Joel, he's here to mirror Ellie. He pale in comparison even tho he's awkwardly funny but i'd be damned to hell before i didn't take my job protecting the little ones seriously.
Finally, the assholes: here's what hurts me more than the fact that i didn't like the game, it's the assholes that feel the need to shoot you down for not sharing their opinions. Somehow on the internet some people have forgotten what opinions are and get very very on the defensive when you do not share theirs.
If you didn't like the game you're an idiot, a bigot and a crybaby. This director, this writer, this actor loved the game and they know more than you about storytelling so that means your opinion is shit and invalid. If i serve you shit on a plate and you don't like it, is your opinion invalid unless you're a 5 stars Chef?
A bigot? What the fuck are you smoking??? I have seen hateful things on the internet but it kills me a little everytime i read someone who didn't like the game opinion on the game and nowhere in the fucking text it says anything about genders or sexuality but you have some fucking idiot coming in in the answers speaking about if you didn't like the game it's because you hate women, gays or trans people. It kills me a little bit inside everytime.
You're a crybaby who didn't get the story you wanted so you hate it, Naughty Dog owes you nothing: i bought the game for 70 fucking euros you bet your ass that for that price i fucking expect to like what i got and be fucking disapointed and intitled to my opinion if i don't. Yes, it's not the story i wanted but MY issue is mainly focused on the fact that it failed to make me like Abby and that Ellie's part was just darkness and pain.
The worst of the worst: the people who hate Joel. Now i have read some dumb ass shit over the years but calling Joel a psycho, pedo, villain is probably at the top. For some reason there's a minority who didn't like the first game who are somehow fucking everywhere, they're at every turn on reddit ready to shit on Joel and for some reason praise Abby as if the ground she walk on is sacred. Those people are the fucking worst and i hate them. And at this point this is all i have to say about them.
To end it: if by some miracle someone actually read all of this, first of all thank you. If you liked the game or not, if you have something to say about what i wrote please don't hesitate to engage with me. I just want to remind everyone that it's all about preferences and opinions and that we're all different but it's no reason to hate on one another. If anything we should share our differences and dwell on them. I needed to take the time to write this for my own sake after months of mauling over it. I wish everyone would be civil when sharing their opinions. There's no reason we can't discuss about a videogame in peace.
Finally i want to thank this subreddit, just like the freefolk did for me after season 8, you were there for me with memes to make it easier. Thank you.

When I made this survey it was like 1 AM and I expected to get a maximum of about 50 responses, I had NO IDEA so many people would take it!! Thanks so much!!! I did get some criticism that the wording of some questions was confusing and/or biased, which is completely fair, so the actual statistical results probably aren't super useful. The main reason I created this survey was to start a discussion and see people's different perspectives, so I've decided to highlight some of the more interesting/thoughtful write-in responses I received.

Also, shoutout to the one feudalist who responded. I had more anarchists than people on the right wing of the political spectrum which I thought was pretty interesting.

Q: Which group faces the highest level of discrimination?

Q: Is gender a social construct?

Q: Are transtrenders a problem?
(I'll note that several people misunderstood the question and thought I was talking about transgender people as a whole. Also a lot of people were unfamiliar with the term, sorry about that)

Q: Can queer liberation be achieved in our current society?
(Sorry to anyone who felt uncomfortable with my use of the term "queer", I didn't mean to upset anybody)

Q: What are your thoughts on allies?

Q: Should there be cops at pride?

Q: What are your thoughts on rainbow/pink capitalism?
(this one was especially hard to narrow down, there were a lot of unique and nuanced responses, so I'm sorry if I didn't include yours. I tried to highlight the full range of opinions on this subject because there were a lot)

Q: Would you say that you like labels?

Q: What are your thoughts on the LGBTQ+ acronym?

Again, thank you guys so much for over 1200 responses!! Sorry for the wall of text! Have a great day everyone :)

2020.08.27 02:32 Vegetable-Peanut-434 [D] Danganronpa

I really like a lot of the simulators on the website and I was excited when I saw that they had a danganronpa simulator because I am such a huge fan of dgr. But the simulator is not as in depth as the other simulators, it says it will become more advance if more people show more interest in it? I was wondering first off how long has it been out? Because I would kill for a in depth mutual killing game simulator, it would be so cool! Instead of the boring text, it is better than nothing but it was very bare bones so I was just wondering is there any chance of it getting a update or has it been out too long?

If you don't think it would be worth it to make the danganronpa simulator more advance, since after all danganronpa is not half as popular and mainstream as the hunger games and big brother, let me tell you why it would be worth it to have an in depth simulator similar to big brother and the hunger games;

The super script numbers are numbering the explanations at the end of the post, just in case anyone gets confused

First off danganronpa is a mutual killing game1. The series follows the same structure as the killing game but with a twist, the blackened2 must commit AND get away with the murder. Then it is up to the remaining students to investigate and try to piece together the mystery by well...investigating the crime scene! To make things easier the mastermind3 gives a basic overview of what went down in what is called the monokuma file4. In the main games there are usually 6 but in the BrantSteele simulator there are like 12-13, but it is the same boring text, "____ votes for _____" for each character that is in the simulator, you start out with all the characters from all the main games, which in total adds up to about 48 characters, so it makes sense why there would be more trials because there are triple the students, but there is no investigation sequence and no trial sequence, in all honesty it feels like some roblox game and they just slapped on the danganronpa characters to it. If the simulator is going to go more in depth i would like to see a more detailed death instead of just text saying "____" died and then every character voting,
Okay let me first say I imagine all of this happening in the first setting in the game, since there are a good amount of locations for murders but its not as open as jabberwock island5
, and to tell you the truth I don't really care for v3 and the setting is just not as important to danganronpa as Hope's Peak also I just like it better so that's why I imagine it at Hope's Peak. Hope's Peak, if anyone is not familiar with the setting, is where the first game takes place, it's in a high school, it has your normal classrooms and it has art room and basically run of the mill rooms you would expect to find at a school, but it has been renovated so now their are dorms for each student, the cafeteria has been remodeled to more of a dining hall and the kitchen is accessible, also there is a game room, a bathhouse, a sauna and just a lot of other things, here is a wiki that describes each floor with more detail, be careful because there are spoilers for Danganronpa 1 and Danganronpa 2 in the wiki and there are also spoilers to the Danganronpa 3 Goodbye Hopes Peak Academy the anime, so if you are planning on watching and playing the games and anime I'd recommend you just stick to where it says floors 1-5.
Moving on...
So my idea is to have like 20-30 different deaths and then the system would randomize it and just throw it in where it says [random death] and just replace it and the same thing with the locations and time and the characters of course, also I think users should have the option to add their own custom murders. The deaths won't be super detailed or anything they will be simple like fatal blow to the head with a shovel died almost immediately and we can have the same death with a different weapon like dying from a head wound, multiple things can cause that, so like the murder weapon can be a dumbbell (found in the both the boys and girls locker room), a shovel (found in the garden), a hammer (boys have them in their tool kit6 ), or for a fun easter egg you can even use a justice hammer!7 The times of death should be the most easy since it's just plopping a random time in nothing too special. Maybe during the trial event a character could say one liners like that or even accuse someone of being there while the murder happened, it could be true or false, it doesn't matter
(victim exiting)[Insert character] claims to have seen [the victim] enter [insert location of murder here]
(murderer? entering)
[insert character] claims to have seen [insert random character here] exit [insert location of murder here]
I have some ideas for specific location deaths, I feel like pool would be good for drowning, anywhere else it wouldn't make sense, also in the first danganronpa game there is lethal poison in the chem lab, so someone can poison someone else's drink and the victim could die in the kitchen/dining hall or maybe just in their dorm, and another death could be being trapped in the sauna
drowning death
[Victim] has been murdered, it was at 12 AM in the pool and it appears that the victim was drowned to death, the victims broken wrist indicates struggle against the attacker there is heavy amounts of water and chlorine in the victims lungs

poison death
[victim] has been murdered, it was at 2 PM in the victims dormitory and it appears that the victim was poisoned by their own drink, the cup lays next to the body, there are high amounts of lethal poison in the bloodstream it was an instant death

they might be a little graphic

Now then, lets move foward

[Random character in simulator] has been murdered, it was at [random time generator] in the [random danganronpa location generator] and it appears that the victim [random death generator]
I don't know how the generator works don't come at me
In my eyes it would follow that basic structure, here's an example of it filled in

Hifumi Yamada has been murdered, it was at 3 AM in the boys locker room and it appears that the victim was stabbed in the chest with a kitchen knife he died of blood loss and damage to vital organs
I feel like that structure would be way more interesting then the just "_________" was killed and if the murder kills two people instead of just one, I feel like it would be okay if they followed a similar if not identical structure, maybe it could say "_____" and "_____" were either hanging out, arguing, or just happened to be in the same room as each other when....
and then they would just use the same formal but instead of just one text it would be two so like this

[insert character here] and [insert character here] were [random activity] in [random location] when a murderer came in!
[Same Character #1] has been murdered, it was at [random time generator] in the [same location as previous text] and it appears that the victim [random death generator]
[Same Character #2] has been murdered, it was at [same time as character #1] in the [same location as previous text] and it appears that the victim [same death as character #1]
you get the idea....

For the investigation sequence, one or two characters can guide the crime scene, maybe the murderer can have a text like
"[character] points the finger at [character]
maybe some people can actually investigate like a group of 3 can be like
[character], [character] and [character] investigated the crime scene together
maybe a character can loose hope
[character] is beginning to loose hope
[character] refuses to give into despair
I feel like those can happen any time of the day though, besides the trial of course
maybe one person can investigate solo
[character] goes off in their own investigation
and here are just some more ideas
[character] finds more evidence
[character] accuses [character] of being an accomplice
[character] wastes time by goofing off

And thats all I gotta say for the investigation part
onto class trials!
the class trials in each game was so unique and different with curve balls and super heated and intense debates until they finally figure out whodunit. Once the participants reach a conclusion they all vote for who they think the murder is. In the series if the murderer or "blackened" as they are called in the series, is rightfully accused and exposed they will get executed because they did not successfully get away with murder and the game continues. Usually if the participants of the game guess wrong they all get eliminated and the blackened lives and wins the game. I am not sure about the simulator because I have only played through it once, I am pretty sure the same rules apply but I am not totally sure, since everyone in the simulator votes for who they thought did it and then the one with the most votes died, but, and correct me if I'm wrong, the votes are just randomly generated, so basically either 1 or 2 people would die and then there would be a repetitive voting process like I said before it was just each character voting for another character. that's how it went when I played through it and I am not totally sure if all of the accused were actually the murderers, the simulator doesn't really tell you since it is only a simple one.
Heres what I think we should do for class trials, maybe a few texts, like

[character] lays out evidence
[character #1] contradicts themselves and [character #2] uses a truth bullet on those yellow words of lies
[character #1] and [character #2] are in a heated debated (random outcome either character 1 or 2 will win) [character x] won the heated debate and [character] felt embarrassed
[character #1] points the finger at [character #4]
[character] tries and throws the investigation off track by claiming they are the blackened, nobody believed them
[character] looks on edge
[character] is accused of being the murderer after tons of nonstop debates they managed to get suspicion off of them
I will add more to this list in the near future

There is so much to work with, you can make original characters or you can use the people you know in real life, (friends, family, pets, etc..) which would be funny, but you could also use memes, celebrities, and you get the idea, I know you can do that in the other simulator, and you can add everyone as it now, but personally in my opinion what makes the other in depth simulators so funny is when you see funny, weird or even violent interactions between memes or see that your friend snuggle with a celebrity for warmth. Also anyone who is a danganronpa fan will back me up on this but it would be so cool if there was a another box to fill out their SHL talent and/or their ultimate6 . That would be ultra cool, and now I have some final events for freetime

[character] spends too much at the school store, [character] is now broke
[character #1] buys [character #2] a present at the school store, [character #2] loves it! They spend the rest of together
[character] goes to the library to read top secret police reports
[character x] spends free time with [character y], they seem to be getting really close
[character] has very good intuition
[character #1] falls into despair but [character #2] gives them a pep talk pulling them out of despair
[character] is starting to have a creepy obsession with hope
[character] is starting loose hope
[character] eats a doughnut
[character] watches a traumatizing
[character] questions if they are being filmed
[character #1] flirts with [character #2] they spend the rest of the day together
[character #1] stalks their crush, [character #2]
[character] questions if this is even real life
[character] plays twilight syndrome murder case
[character 1] tells [character 2] [character 3] [character 4] and [character 5] not to give up hope [character 2] [character 3] [character 4] but [character 5 ] is still wavering between hope and despair
[character 1] and [character 2] have a sauna battle before becoming best bros for life
[character 1 ] calls [character 2] a fat pig which [character 2] apologizes profusely for
[character 1] tries to manipulate everyone to thinking they were the didn't
[character] hides away in their dorm all day
[character] hasn't refuses to take a shower
[character 1] tells [character 2] about their obsession with their sister, [character 2] is super concerned about [character 1]'s sanity and well being

okay well thats it! it took me hours to finish this but I am so proud of it

I know it's a lot and I know most people will not care but here is some things I explain more here just in case you were confused with anything, also if you are confused with anything that I don't bring up here or in the main post, feel free to dm me and I will try and reply ASAP
  1. A mutual killing game is where everyone is supposed to kill each other and the one(s) who survive is/are the winner(s)
  2. The blackened is what the Danganronpa franchise calls the guilty party
  3. The mastermind is the one who is behind the killing game, pulling the strings, using monokuma as a front most likely so they didn't reveal their identity
  4. The monokuma file is a file that is given once the investigation begins and then is taken away after the class trial is over. The file contains the cause of death, the time of death, and if their was anything lethal in the victims body leading up to their death. Not to mention the file also has basic information about the victim, to be specific their name, age, weight and height.
  5. The location of Super Danganronpa 2
  6. A SHL is super high school level abbreviated, so a super high school level talent is basically means you are the very best at the thing you do and a school called Hopes Peak, which only accepts the most elite of the elite, you must be the very best at what you do and you must be in high school to attend scouted you because of it and an ultimate is the talent Hope's Peak helped you perfect, you can't be SHL if you already graduated high school but once you perfect your talent at Hope's Peak you will forever be an ultimate, for example, I'm going to use Charli D'Ameilo as an example because I feel like most people know her and she's in high school, Charli could be a super high school level tiktok sensation and once she is recruited by Hope's Peak she would become the ultimate tiktoker, but after she graduates high school she will no longer be a SHL tiktok sensation but she will stay the ultimate tiktoker

2020.08.19 23:01 lyammalik Experiences with IOBs, in the physical world, before getting into this community

Writing this afterwards: it’s kinda messy, but I think it makes sense. I think sometimes we brush off weird experiences as the product of our minds, but we also feel there’s more to it.
This is just opening my own experiences, as I feel looking at them under this lense is quite helpful, and value how carlos’ work could help our view of the supernatural.
Look for the + if you wanna skip around.
->+ = key/important
I was gonna write about this on the other post, but figured it’d make more sense on it’s own.
To start this of, even tho it’s the last thing that’s come to mind, but might be relatable:
around a week after being born I had meningitis, and it seemed like I would not make it. Interestingly enough, a “witch” told my grandma what I had before my family, and maybe even the doctors, knew.
I’ve always wondered where this kind of thing comes from. Is it by connecting with the other’s energy, some other being that’s with us, an underlying system in our bran/body that usually gets overwritten/buried? —will come back to this later.
I also wonder how being close to dying might have affected me. I think the infection might have helped develop other parts of my brain, and now kinda have access to more space, but that’s another thing.
-I’ve always been quite sensitive, and sensed things in people, aswell as where there was nothing/no one.
As you all well know, our perception of the world tends to be overwritten by our family and culture, but hopefully we’ll manage to help future generations stay more in tune
I remember some weird ass dreams, things falling on their own.. and thankfully others saw those at times too, but mostly those freaky creepy feelings(which I kinda attribute to our fear of the unknown, the dark...
Although now I’m also open to our brain perceiving something, and “creating” some representation of it.. but based on something that was perceived (cannot be apply to everything, but some situations yeah)
Anyway.. the strongest experience I’ve had, at least visually, was at my aunt’s funeral. I was 15/16then. My dad and her had fallen off for some time. The last time we had been together was probably 4 years before, bc we when to visit the to the Canary Islands.
Interestingly enough I had a weird experience there. We were staying in some bungalows, and my cousins and I stayed on the same.
They had locked the door from the outside, but somehow I managed to sleepwalk out(there was a way of opening from the inside, which maybe I picked up on), and go to the swimming pool. I still remember it lol. Then some woman called me, and I went there, but don’t remember anything after getting to the door.
The next day I was telling my family about the weird experience, but don’t remember if I thought it was a dream, or they thought so. We get to the entrance, and the workers said: “hey, it’s the kid from last night!” Lmao
I was like “I told you!!” Ahhahah
Might not be related, but it’s kind of a funny story; sorry for backtracking tho.
1) We were at the church, and my father went to talk. I had been feeling alright, but a bit after he started, I started feeling kinda sick, which evolved to sick, which turned to being unable to hold myself together lol.
Now it reminds me of what you say when doing the black room practice, that the head goes forward when blacking our, or about to, but I’m the motion was more than my head, kinda like my whole body —although mostly the top—.
++Oops, I forgot it. So I was feeling a bit sick, but the transition to feeling full sick came after I saw an irregular black ring—not small, medium/big size. I was a bit far in the church, but it would encompass the stomach to above the head, and the sides were a bit more after the arms, of my father
[holy fuck, as I was putting the ++ to make things more clear, I realized the ring was kind of the one in arrival. I’ll look for it, but will still try to draw it]
I noticed it, definitely caught my attention, and next thing I perceive is it flying towards me so damn fast. It got to me, and that when I couldn’t hold myself togethemy top body was falling forward.
(As I was writing this, it came to find how Carlos felt after being attacked trying to liberate the blue scout and, more aligned with this, the black energy when (I think) he got out of his room on his energetic body
As I considered that, my left side “turned on”, kinda like goosebumps, and I got emotional. Probably because of seeing some correlation to what happened to me in his experience, after having questioned it so much)
Anyway: my mom noticed, and worried quite fast. I was like “it’s alright, I’ll piece myself together”, but couldn’t.
She took me outside, and after feeling a bit better, she and my grandma decided to take me to another witch.
+She told me I have an open body, and that it’s easy for other being to pass though, or interact with me.
I wanted to learn more about it, and focus on that ability, but I let it go. Last time I went to see her, after some other weird ass experiences I had, she told me she felt I wasn’t as open body, but that I could get it back.
Interestingly enough I’ve been thinking about how getting into philosophy, politic, and psychology has made it so my logic/reason has created some wall in my mind...
thankfully Im in touch with my intuition and I’ve been tearing it down hahaha
(Damn, I hope going like this isn’t annoying hahaha)
{about (1): I used to rationalize it by thinking that I kinda knew they weren’t getting along, and maybe it was a representation of how my unconscious perceived my aunt would react as energy(??????). I do think it was real tho, but still wonder if my mind played me.
+also, and more importantly: my grandma told me she wanted to talk with my dad on her deathbed, that it was all she wanted... so she probably died with some intent tying them together(?)}
I remembered this experience writing this, and I think it’s worth sharing
2) so I was on an abandoned house, on the outside of the town I lived in, with a friend. We were chilling on the top side, as you can see the trees and the sea from there.
I noticed some weird shadows with my periferal vision, which was kinda freaky, but cool at the same time.
Weirdest thing is that at one point I felt someone touching my hair, a mixture of caressing it and moving it up.
I was sure it happened, and that had to be her, but she was like nope. I insisted, and ended up saying that it was a great joke if she had, because she had fooled me completely, but nope, she didn’t do it.
2b That witch told me some weird things happened by those abandoned houses, maybe rituals, but don’t remember.
2c on another house near that one, with two friends of mine, after smoking weed.. we heard some noises on the basement, and went to check it. We didn’t see anything, quite probably an animal, but we felt like the presence of a girl.
We got quite freaked out, goosebumps and all, and when we heard some more noises we ended up bailing. The energy was quite weird, and my friend ended up scratching his car on the tiny streets lol, which kinda allowed for a blank slate as we were kinda laughing our asses off
**okay, so this last one, and parts of the other, could be understood more rationally. Particularly the last one, as we kinda induced ourselves those sensations. 2a) i’m sure about what I felt, and she seemed to be dead serious, but can’t know for sure.
But here it is, this takes the cake.. divided with (1) tho hahaha
[kinda went on a tangent, 3c is the cake hahaha)
+3) a. I kinda feel energies, but moreover after smoking. Those hightened states usually involve “answers” with objects falling, be in they neighbors place, my own, or a different current of energy, trying to close me in.
I was at a point where I was reconnecting with this, moreover after discovering the remoteviewing sub. I remember the night before, playing with an old toy I had and my cat, I wanted to test something.
I felt like that might have been a charged object, as I was so involved with it, and the house was so charged. My brother sleepwalked more than usually, and so did I, but just a bit.
Anyway, after playing slowly, I kinda did a motion towards the door, quite focused, now I’d probably say with intent.
+The cat stopped playing, and started staring at the door For 20+secs. His eyes moved a bit, and he went running to the kitchen. I felt there was something, and felt stupid for not having recorded it 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️
I don’t remember if it was that same night, but I felt some other “conscience”, for lack of a better word, and thought it was my cat. Later on I played calling his name in my mind, and he indeed reacted (75%~ percent of the time
{I think recreating this is kinda hard, moreover on the usual awareness/state our conscience is. Probably with silence it could be done, aswell as the location of our assemblage point.
I’ll explore this once I get back to Spain.}
I feel like cats can’t perceive more than we popularly know. Egiptians come to mind.
Particularly, not having as many overlapping systems might make it easier to perceive some fantastic things, together with their inner workings.
B) i had decided to stop smoking, and clean myself. I got my last 5/10€, but just smoked one at night as I ended up kinda tired, and drifting in my mind.
Interestingly, although I don’t remember for sure if it was that night, but I was quite active in my mind. After some strong ass recapitulation seems, and feeling weird energies, I realized i could have been sending strong energies.
Oh, I remember now. I remember trying to communicate mentally with my brother, or some energy.
There were some reactions, but no clear answer. The reactions came both from his room, and noises he did, aswell as the house upstairs, and my cat.
+I started feeling bad, as my mind was kinda racing, and being aware of our “antennas” + the heightened state I was in + the noises and weird energy.. I thought/felt I could be bombarding someone
++I think saying the electromagnetic field might explain it better, as I definitely was charged, and I feel it would have impacted.. moreover mixed with trying to send my energy outside lmao
At one point there was this outburst against my energy, kinda like someone was done and wanted me the shut the fuck off hahaha
I had felt really bad, but the mixture of my mind still running, and being curious to the point of wanting a reaction, so I could know if it was just in my mind, kept me going.
+I remember that my mood quite changed, kind of like when someone tells you off and you know they are kinda right. It got to the point of a bit of angst.
But I decided to hold my ground, and got back my place.
(It weird sharing all of this, but if this might help in some way, I guess it’s worth it lol)
+++After a bit of peace, some back and forth, accompanied by some noises, and then peace again... I started feeling some energy creeping in, slowly getting bigger and bigger
A few seconds later, my brother gets in the house LOL
I must have looked like the emoji meme:
👁 👄 👁 lmao
I must have been so focused I didn’t notice he left. And he definitely had smoked, so I feel it made this easier.
He’s also had weird experiences, to the point where the cat got in a protective stance, looking so intensely to the dark, and kinda moving.
My brother said he instantly started praying, even tho he hadn’t done it in such a long time.
{my take is that sometimes it’s just coming from within, others it’s kind of a mixture of our biases to something we actually perceive, and then a more pure form where our imagination makes some sense but it’s a more pure perception—although I guess we can also just “see”}
+Oh, I almost forgot. Before sleeping I actually had the feeling of my consciousness expanding, but I got afraid of it being cancer or something, and kinda cut it short.
Dunno if it was that night, but I also got to hear a different part of me, but it kinda stayed there. Probably fear got in the way too.
Although it might look like I’m set on what I believe of this experiences, I’ve always questioned what might be behind.
++The most common is doubting whether the energy comes from inside, but a part outside the fram of mind/consciousness from the moment, a different set of neurological connections that haven’t been “voiced”/acted upon much..; Or outside. The ones about feeling energy in the house might have been internal, and the electromagnetic field, aswell as sincronicities, might explain it; but it also felt like there was more to it.
Quite a shame fear got in the way; thankfully now I’m more determined.
But the cake wasn’t there lmao, it’s here:
+3c) the morning after I decided to smoke the rest as I woke up. I think this influenced a lot, as the frequency my brain was at was different, and mixed with the weed and those heightened made an interesting recipe.
(When I’m in that house I usually smoke on a garage that wasn’t finished, as they stopped building the rest of the building from the block where I live.
The place feels charged. So damn charged. Dunno if something happened there, or it’s influenced by the people also going there to smoke and do their thingy.
It’s something I’ve considered. The mark we leave on the place we are, depending on the states we are in, our energy, and so on.
I ended up “challenging” myself to go there, just because I felt repelled, kinda scared. If you were there I feel you’d get it, although you might experienced those kinds of places too.
It feels like a mixture of our suggestion, and something else being at play.
+I remember the first time I confronted it, and stood my ground. The feeling of being watched was so strong, and as I was looking around the dark, at one point it felt like when you lock eye contact.
+Holy fuck, I was feeling my body vibrating, but at that point it got so damn strong. Funnily and interestingly enough, I got an advertisement from Gaia talking about that same thing lfmao.
Those damn vibrations.
I was like holy fuck. Gotta love those sincronicities.
Another time I suddenly got the image in my mind of me hanged with the long ass cable of my headphones, as I had the intention of exploring staying some more challenging the sensations...
My body instantly turned to the door, like going in rails lol.
One of the next nights I thought about going again, but I wasn’t feeling. I overthought it, considering if it was just being afraid, but it’s just an artificial place, and I felt like smoking in nature... I walked past it, and 20 secs later I turned, so challenge whatever might be underlaying that decision.
As I was about to go in, I felt quite strongly not doing it, and turned around again.
+Around 30 secs later a song said something like “get the fuck out of there”, and I instantly connected with how it would’ve said it as i would be getting set in the environment, and how creepy it would be.
There was also a sincronicity with the time, which I looked and it was a satanic number or something like that, but I don’t remember what it was... And finding the voice message out of the 300+ will be kinda hard hahaha)
Holy fuck, sorry for the wall of text. I hope you find it interesting, or it’s made you connect with something in your life.
+++the start of the cake:
I go the place I started sitting at the last times, where you can see a bit of the sky. It was really dark, and I couldn’t see well, but I noticed something on the place.
I touched it with my feet, to then see that it was a sandwich someone had just eaten a bite off.
As I did that, my mind started racing seeing the perspective of someone in the place, hadn’t gone to the lower floor, and seeing me touching his food with my foot lol.
I got kinda paranoid, dunno tho if I had already lit it up.
I was with the headphones, but I could heafeel something on that lower floor; although it seemed like no one was there. I thought about two friends of mine who also go there, but not at that time.. and they don’t like that kind of sandwich.
A bit after that, I heard them laughing. Probably on my mind. But as I had gotten into remote viewing, I also considered how, maybe, I set a connection to them, reinforced by all the times together, moreover there, and if they could feel it, even unconsciously.
It probably wasn’t the case, although this has made me consider whether IOBs could use this kind of thing to get some reaction, thus energy.
But it probably was just me.
Anyway, the interesting thing is that what got me out of the spiral was a bird chirping. It made me snap out of it, and realize the spiral.
It happened two more times, as I was getting in the spiral. Even tho I felt I was okay, I noticed how the underlaying systems might have been agitated...
Which would definitely affect my electromagnetic field. And I feel bird, and other animals, can sense that.
The last time I got in the spiral, it even came inside the garage lol. It was an interesting connection I felt.
I was also watching unity, on Gaia, and had learned his take on Angels and demons (beings from the 4th dimension, that actually work together; the forme with light, latter with matter. If we can’t learn with the help of angels, the ally with demons to set traps to us.. something like that)
I considered if the bird could have had/been a deeper being; now I’d say inorganic being...
But I think it might have just been that it felt the change in the electromagnetic field
(bear in mind, this is just the foundation of the cake hahaha. Again, sorry for the wall of text)
++++ now to the coolest part. The top of the cake:
I think my grandma and I communicated telepathically.
I go to my room, and heard again the bird, which was cool. I was thinking about my projects, and then I hear my grandma saying something along the lines of “you know it’s really hard to live off your projects, filliño”(which is like a sweet mixture of son and darling in Galician)
But she was theoretically talking on the phone with some nephew; but something she’s told to me repeatedly in the last 4 years.
It was weird, but I kept on my thing... but she replied to it again. I started awknowledging more. Happened again with the next thing I thought...
so I started kinda drifting mid sentence.. and she’d also do that!! I would make her hesitate!!!
It was so weird, but also cool!
It caused a change in her. She want from talking kinda in her high horse, but kinda sweetly, to doubting more, feeing less confident; which seemed like a consequence of our line of conversation.
This went on for 5 min or more. My confirmation was when she messed up, acted like she was talking to my mom... on the same “call” as the nephew one.
That was like a click. Sadly I don’t remember much now of the conversation, but maybe I made an audio about it, will check.
At one point I felt something pulling from my leg in the direction of her room, which freaked the fuck out of me.
{personally, I think it’s quite a possibility, and she is quite intuitive}
After this, I started questioning how it could have happened:
Underlaying system in our brains/bodies that can interpret that way of communicating, at least when being in an appropriate frame of mind, or part of the assemblage point..
Inorganic beings that are with us, and can access that information, and lay it onto us...
I just imagined it all(?). This I never truly felt. I know it happened
What I said in the beginning about the witch, that I said would get back to, is that this knowledge has fit and expanded my view of the world...
All of this experiences where before I knew any of this, but this helps bring parts of them more into the light, which in itself, I think, validates carlos’ work.
I feel like we can definitely help bring it more into light, and refine more the system.
Oh, the point about the witch:
As I was writing it i considered whether some she’d have some ally, guest or, more horrifying.. “squatter”.
(Now I feel this deserves a post on it’s own, and will probably do so tomorrow)
And that entity could’ve know what was going on more clearly, and passing the info down.
The same would fit with my grandma, moreover with some other things in our lives and make the possibility of have some Inorganic squatter with us.
Again, the key is to have an open mind and entertain all of this from the middle. It makes sense, but who knows what could have been.
Anyway, I feel like exploring this kinds of things under this lense can be quite helpful, expanding evermore the range it has..
this reminds me of Don Juan telling Carlos, after his encounter with the blue scout, that he believed the IOBs interacted in our world constantly...
which made me remember this moments, and kinda freeze —which I used, alongside its movement of my AP to meditate and then sleep under its frame.
This is so messy, sorry lmao. Hopefully it makes sense.
I actually have another big one to share, but will try to post first, as it feels like it might be over the limit, although it hasn’t stopped me
Meh, I’ll try here anyway:
This one is the most recent of these, probably 3 month ago. After smoking, I was feeling strange energies have felt those also without smoking, but not as strongly), feeling a connection with the friend who also smokes in that garage.. probably because of smoking at the same time(?) I’ve met someone who thought it linked, and also that weed allows to see through entropy.
Anyway, at one point it felt like we had stablished a connection, and managed to talk a bit. Seemed like he was surprised, but once I started doubting it, and thinking it must have been a representation from my brain, it started fading.
Also had a moment after seing a weird light where I was feeling how that strange energy would feel about me, and the reaction to my not reacting
{I felt it might have been some internal current, but now I consider more something external... probably what attacked me later}
After some other weird things, like some pain in my ear and losing a bit of hearing,
(My neighbor on that other house lost the hearing of the same ear I felt, which was kinda creepy.
Back then I was considering more the flow of energy between people than IOBs)
I went back inside, and meditated on my bed.
It was quite intense. I love those weed trips. Around a week ago after an amazing ride (check my comments, there was a reset of my consciousness, and flashing of a spider...) I started considering more like a perceive psychedelics. Using it too often kinda took it for granted
But already a few months ago I was doing it more for the explorations of those hypothetical depths of the natural world(energy, other beings, etc)
++Anyway. The big things was that at some point at felt myself going up, towards a bright white light; accompanied by such a feeling of bliss, happiness...
And then... PUM. Something knocked me the fuck down. I felt at the depths of darkness. Some energy started cornering me. Like, for real, it surrounded all of me, and started pressing down... till I snapped out of it, and pushed my energy out, regaining my space, and pushing the foreign energy out.
Interestingly, I then apologized to the energy, saying that, fuck, if you approach me in such a way, how could I not react like that. And that if it wanted to communicate in some way, it was cool, but never trying to get inside me, manipulate me.. respecting my boundaries in general.
I didn’t know if it was from within (don’t think so), or outside; but I have the attitude of understandiing, or trying to, others... and with this kind of energies, being from other people, or IOBs, it’s harder to do.
What makes it more interesting is that my approach to IOBs seems to have been in this way before getting into this. It feels like tiptoeing around the dark, being mindful of how what I think could be taken by them, but it’s quite cool.
I maybe haven’t portrayed it aswell as I could, but I’ll never forget that moment.
I’m looking forward to going deeper into this, and communicate with them through lucid dreams and the black room.
Holy fuck, I hadn’t written for so long, and so focused, in a long time. I’ll link this with the BrP, and then trying to lucid dream.
Dunno if I’ll check the comments before sleeping, as I don’t want to mess up my frame/assemblage point; but if I finish the session out of it I might.
I actually am so thankful to be a part of this community lol, looking forward to exploring this together.. and getting to know you!!

2020.08.15 19:00 2413Yep Feedback after a month

I decided to write up a wall-o-text review and post it somewhere where HG might see it. There are a few different reasons why people write up reviews like this. Some just wanna trash the game. My motivation is easy, and something anyone who likes the game shares: I want the game to get better! I know that nothing I will say is going to be unique. But I feel it important to add my voice to whatever chorus is out there.
This game has a lot of potential. I bought it on the spur-of-the-moment a month ago. When I bought it, I didn't even remember all the controversy that surrounded the game 4 years ago. I just recognized the name, and the '18 quintillion' thing. After spending a few minutes in game, and realizing that I would be spending a lot of time on the intertubes and Discord trying to understand what I'm supposed to be doing, I came across the controversy and read up on it. Didn't pollute my view of the game, and I kept playing.
Where am I coming from? What kind of gamer am I? This will help explain my review, right? I'm a moisture-farming explorer (SWG reference there for any of you old-timers, lol). I have nearly 3k hours into Fallout 4, but only ever completed the story one time, have never stepped into ANY of the expansions other than Automatron. I spent the vast majority of my time in settlements (and I'll be playing a fresh game again one day soon). I played from the first day, and desperately hoped to see completed, Everquest Landmark. I dig building and exploring.
I got comfortable with the game, figuring out the quirks and stuff, after about 30 hours and moved to a new save. I added mods on the second save since the base game was just...problematic. What did I mod? The black Discovery bars are stupidly too-long; the exocraft are almost completely useless (and the only updated mod I found doesn't really make them better enough); shop dialogues are really really really frustrating with a billion clicks just to get past all the dumb chit-chat; and how in the heck are there asteroids literally everywhere?!?! I made nights darker, and improved the lighting too.
Now I am on my third save (and completely, totally over the hirelings. The starter quests are pretty good, but the flow and sequence should be reworked, plus we should be able to bypass completely that entire system if we choose, since everything can be bought with nanites/units. I mean bypassed as in don't show me even a single pop-up about finding an Overseer or having anything to do with the starter stuff. That idiot scrap dealer harasses me with notifications every single time I go in a space station, and I have to pay 5 million just to make him stop? Bullcrap....
So what's my top-level TL;DR summary? The game is far too shallow. The '18 quintillion' gimmick does not deliver at all. There are only maybe 10-15 different planets to be found. There are a LOT of silly inconsistencies in the procedural system, like a "lush" planet having not one single standing body of water; yet there is boiling rain?; on a planet where the temp normally is 'normal' but shoots up two hundred degrees in an instant and yet all the plants and animals are fine; where storms come every 8-11 minutes (I timed it) and last 4-7 minutes?; where there is standing water on a scorched planet; where every cave system on any planet is exactly the same; where there is not one single true mountain range to be found; where there are no planets that have vast flat fields like found in the Great Plains of the US; where clouds exist on every-single planet, regardless of logic or reason (no atmosphere? NO PROBLEM, let's put clouds!!); where there are an infinite amount of asteroids in every direction...
There are things that I am perfectly willing to ignore for game-play reasons. I have no problem whatsoever with the incredibly shallow atmosphere, or the way the system looks in space with planets bunched up right next to each other. The game wouldn't be fun if those things were more realistic. I can laugh and wave off some of the truly silly looking creatures in the game (like the bear-sized bouncing grapefruit animal thing). I don't want a scientific simulation. But this game has gone too far in the opposite direction on things that I, and my playstyle, notice and feel strongly about. Adding a little more 'sim' to the game would be a good thing IMHO.
So what's my list? Fine, I'll offer up some stuff. This is my personal feelings on it. I'm not interested in fighting anyone about this. You do you! But here is a top-level list of stuff presented from the perspective of a player who now has approx 90 hour spaced over 3 saves. Again, I am positive that there is not one single unique thing to read about here. I want to add my voice to the chorus. And I am waiting for my little AI farm to fill up, heh. I will scatter a few little ideas in there too, cause I know there is a drought of ideas from the community on how to make things better! (/s)
First, Most Important Wish - Stop Using Inventory Management As A Feature!! Stop restricting how much stuff we can collect. Stop forcing us to spend countless hours managing our inventories. INVENTORY MANAGEMENT IS NOT FUN!!! I am an advanced "Traveller", and I can't hack out 6 pieces of wood to make a box to keep stuff in?!? I can't dig a hole and stuff things into that? I can't utilize the vast space in my freighter to store 18 quintillion units of ore? I can't have practically infinite storage on my base? Come on HG, it's just an integer in a database/xml table on my OWN PC. If you want to control the rate at which we get stuff, focus on gathering rates, tiered gathering tech, volume-based storage, spoilage, etc... Inventory restrictions are a tool developers use when they can't find an interesting way to address a very-real human interest in hoarding, and it smacks of trying to manipulate and control the players. Don't do that. Don't try to force us to play the game the way you want us to. If we want to have millions of units of every single gatherable item in the game, don't try to stop us. It just frustrates us.
PC controls - We really need our own bindings and controls, completely separate from consoles.
Waypoints and Tracking - As an explorer, I really REALLY need to ability to track things I want to re-visit. The Discovery tab is a super-simple and mostly useless feature. Save beacons can not be labelled, and the colors aren't really distinct enough. I come across cool little terrain features from time-to-time, or cave entrances I want to explore later (wanna build an underground base), or just keep track of the trade depots or other POI.... and I can't do that in-game. I have to keep a little spreadsheet where I manually add the planetary coordinates. And then actually using those coords to find the spot again is a super-huge hassle due to how you've warped a square map to cover a spherical planet. Waypoints solve all of that. Make it a separate file in our save directory so we can back it up on it's own, and to keep the normal save file from getting too big.
Surveying - Why can't I release an expendable drone from my spaceship that will burrow into the surface of a planet and provide a reading on the composition of that part of the terrain? Why can't I track mineral/gas/EM hotspots from INSIDE an exocraft. In fact, how am I able to track this with my little visor? Maybe that tech is too big to fit into a visor and I need an exocraft to find those? Why can't I scan the atmosphere from my ship to determine the weather? Why can't I launch a constellation of satellites from my base that lets me have a certain amount of control over the weather and to track various planetary features?
More ships! - I am sure I stand alone in having absolutely no interest in Living ships. They all look the same to me. Boring! There are some cool exotics out there. But in all, there simply is not nearly enough different ships. Entire games have been built up over the creation and sale of ships, even if it is little more than buying a JPG (looking at you SC!). Ships are important, and more effort should be put into them. Release a new ship design every month (or add more parts to the procedural system).
Ship Roles - Apparently this used to be a thing, and was changed? If so Put it back! There should be a reason why we acquire a Hauler over a Fighter, over an Explorer, etc... Or give us the ability to craft items that are designed for those roles. Make the ship into just a shell that we then fill up with a certain type of Pulse and Warp engine suited for what we're going to use that ship for. A certain kind of shield, launchers, weapons, etc... Let us craft modules for any ship hull that let's us design how we want to use the ship. Dogfighting, black hole explorers, surveying, long-distance warping, asteroid mining, etc...
More Ship Slots - To go with the above 2, let us build a collection! It should be at least double what we have now. And with the Ship Role playing a part (again?), there would be a good reason to have more ships.
Expand Crafting - Right now the system is simple enough a kid in pre-school can do it. Give us two options: Let our hirelings build stuff for us (the 'simple' system), or let us do it ourselves, but with far greater immersion, complexity, and with better results.
Hirelings - Speaking of which, who are these aliens and why do they hang around!? Let's give them something to do. Let them wander our base, doing what they do. Collecting crops, fixing damage to our ships/exocraft, building the parts of our base we have planned to add, etc...
Exocraft - Man, I was excited when I built my first one. I was psyched to zip around the planet, surveying mining, fighting. And then I got in one..... Yeah, these need serious love. Give them Roles as explorer, fighter, transportation, racing. Some should be a lot faster, others better at surveying, and others able to fight better.
Sentinels - OK, so the infinite number of these things is kinda weird. I get that there are a lot, but really? I kill one and 100% of the time it leads to an escalation? I can just jump in a ship/exocraft and suddenly they are blind to my existence? The nature of their response should be much more varied. Maybe I can kill a couple and that's it; no more show up. Maybe I kill one little one and suddenly I have 5 walkers surrounding me!
Base defenses - Why can't I deploy a variety of defenses that let me fight off the Sentinels long-term? Maybe suppress their ability to appear in the area even? NPC defenders I hire like I do frigates that will patrol my base? Or send on missions?
Planet Z axis- Overall the planets need to have more depth. I should not be able to hit the bottom limit of the map in 5 seconds of digging. Oceans should often be deep. Really deep, where it is completely black. There should be actual mountains that take an hour to climb up on foot. Or at least several minutes. Plenty of games out there have a long Z axis on their maps. Maybe NMS can too?
Freighters - Let us inhabit the entire thing! There is a vast amount of space in these ships, and we are restricted to a tiny area. And maybe these are not things that every player needs, or even wants (links to the inventory restriction thing above. As it is, every player MUST have one just for the extra inventory WE NEED). Maybe the game around freighters can be boosted dramatically, where they can fight, be destroyed, invaded, go places small ships can't go, be unable to go places smaller ships can go, etc... There is a whole paid DLC that can be built up around freighters.
Variety - This has become a meme, but a lot of this can be wrapped up in that word. We just need more variety. More than 2 or 3 different types of space stations, more base building parts (not just deco), more freighter styles, more varied planet generation and features, etc...
Story/Lore - Due to how you all handled the way aliens speak, it's been really difficult understanding what the heck is going on with the story. I intend to find somewhere that just puts it all together in normal English. But regardless, there is a lot you all can do, and should do, with Story. This is the sort of thing that really makes a game shine. Don't continue to just rely on the '18 quadrillion' and procedural thing. NMS can blow out the market if you all make the right choices. Imagine all the SC and ED fans that have not yet played NMS.
Final Thoughts - I don't regret playing the game. I'll certainly rack up more hours. There are still some Mega and normal exotic biomes I have not seen. I've not gotten to the 'core' yet. There has been no compelling reason to so far. I've only ever seen 2 galaxies, but then from what I hear, it doesn't really matter anywhere as they are all just the same anyway. But, there are a few things on my list to do. Build a big base, set up a huge farm for organics, ride a few animals, get a billion units (a little over 200m so far, most from crashing cobalt markets), do an underwater and a cave base, do one of those derelict freighters.
The game can be really beautiful (especially with some of the mods out that improve the sky), and you all have added in a great tool for screenshots (even if it no longer records the glyphs, lol).If/when you guys can add some nice depth to the game, it will be someplace that a lot of people can sink thousands of hours into. Maybe NMS v2.0, with a game engine that can handle very deep and tall maps, allowing deep oceans and caves, and tall mountains? The space game mechanics seem pretty good as is. Just need more content. So thanks for what you've done so far, and I hope to see the game reach ever-higher heights!

2020.08.10 14:59 maby66 Monday musings. Couple of things that I have thought about recently....

I'd like to try and make this not a shit fest/bitchy post, but actually discuss some of the stuff in WoTC. I'm not sure how that's going to work out, as I feel a lot of people are getting worked up about things that although they are annoying, are cosmetic/temporary and will be gone by and by. I'm more interested in some of the deeper game direction/experience stuff as I've been playing for over 6 years and feel that gives me a level of understanding/investment to make a call on things that are happening just now...
1) Gameplay/player intelligence - Cross play has been great for server populations and game queues, and I don't subscribe to the "xbox are all shitters/playstation are all shitters theory" - whether in jest or not. What I am finding is that as a solo player the number of games I enjoy seems to have dropped off a cliff. It's been going like that for a while, and I don't think there is any one point to say that it's worse since "X" date, but how it feels at the moment is that a good 80% of games are blow outs, and it's random luck if you'll be on one end of it or the other.
I'm solidly green WN8 (at least I think I still am, haven't checked since the sites were knocked out) so I think I can understand gameplay dynamics enough to be useful/recognise what's happening. Thing is - I play for fun, not marks or mastery. I want to log on, have a few games, enjoy it. Gaming is a past time for me and quite often I'll be working it around other stuff like cooking dinner - play around, finish, back to garage while I do something else for 5/10 minutes, back in and start another round. A common response on here to people who express frustration with current gameplay standards has been to recommend to platoon up/play with similar skilled players in order to increase enjoyment levels/decrease frustration. That should be my choice not something I'm forced into doing (which is an element when it comes to the season pass - but that's another thing), having to plan gaming sessions around other peoples availability or annoying the people I'm playing with as I nip off to do stuff at the same time as my tanking. This game wasn't designed as purely platoon orientated gameplay so what does that say about the state of it if that's the seemingly only way to get back to simple enjoyment?
There's multiple things at play here which influence this to some degree or another - the age of the game, number of veteran players decreasing over time, learning curve past T4, lack of meaningful in game tuition, high tier tanks in the hands of players with less understanding of gameplay/mechanics - and I don't think there is a single answer to it. What I would say is that I don't see any indication from WGCB that this is concerning to them, and that's my problem with it - because if the game becoming less satisfying for veterans and/or new players, then player retention will drop and cross play will be a sticking plaster over reducing player numbers. Lower numbers of paying customers will have multiple impact areas in terms of investment in the game itself, while I suspect that WGCB will then look at additional ways to monetise/increase spend from the players left to try to fill the revenue gap. Is Season Pass on top of Premium the beginning of this? Are the constant stream of "free" tank events the incentives to keep players playing as long as possible, despite frustrations they may have with the gameplay - or are WGCB trying to get more spend on other premiums/re-skins while they still can?
2) Bugs/Lag - meme worthy though both of these are, it would be good to try and talk about these objectively as I think there's more to say on this. With lag (and related elements such as ghost shells and so on) server performance and gameplay experience based on it are variable for individuals. I don't think it's good enough for WGCB to write every instance off as "it's your ISP" though that can be a contributing factor. What is frustrating is WGCB's seeming insistence that their services are infallible, when we see from other parts of the puzzle that they are anything but. The number of bugs that the latest release rolled out with, and the multiple bugs (visual mostly) that haven't been fixed weeks down the line, was/is not good. I've seen some posts to the effect that many of these are minor, that delivering this service is not simple, that these will be fixed in due course and don't impact the game so much. I hear that, but my response is also that this is WGCB's job. This is literally what they are paid to do. How can you get to release a significant update, trailed for many weeks, with really obvious things like the tracker of the summerslam levels numerics glitching over the text - how can you ship that update with that still sitting there? Which makes me think that it was fully known prior to 5.0 going live, but was deemed acceptable. And it still is, as it's not been fixed.
The thing is this makes me think that bugs and issues - lag, graphical or otherwise - are not being given priority and resources for fix. Why not? Should not the user experience on a purely online, multi player only game be the highest priority, in order to encourage spend/player retention? The lack of investment in this area by WGCB compares unfavourably to many other developers/games, who have much more regular updates for hotfixes and balance/gameplay updates - Borderlands 3 for example is pretty much weekly, with balance in particular being constantly tweaked based on feedback from the community as well as analysis of the metrics.
How it feels is that bugs, gameplay and related issues are taking a significant back seat in terms of priority, with focus being put on the season pass/monetisation and revenue generation (tank sales primarily). Of course this has to be a focus, as without income the game cannot survive, but there also has to be balance. Potential customers won't stay around to buy the latest season pass/premium if the game they are playing is unsatisfactory.
3) Monetisation/Season Pass - I've paid premium for years. Not a huge buyer of gold outside of that. I've bought a fair few tanks, but I'm by no means a whale. I'm not a big fan of the season pass idea as it stands and my thoughts are as follows..
This iteration of the season pass feels like a test event - how many people will purchase, what level and so on. The base (2k gold) feels like a no brainer as IF you complete, you will receive the 2k gold back together with all the season pass rewards. All good on the surface, but my question then becomes what is the point of Premium? 24k gold (or 12k in the sale) invested to give me higher earnings in both xp and silver, in order to progress furthefaster in the game. In previous seasons/events that has been sufficient - my annual investment in premium was a sufficient entry fee paid for participation, paid back in swifter progress through the event and gaining the full rewards offered. But now, unless I make additional purchases (season pass) I'm gated from full participation/reward. This is a different model from previous events/seasons, and if it continues in it's current form I have concern.
Where WGCB have previously offered full season rewards, plus bonus rewards for premium purchasers, even incremental purchase of premium (buy a day prior to completing the event/tier that gave the premium reward tank such as the KpZ 50t) now you have no choice but to make a full season pass purchase. Layered with the tweaks to the tiers/tasks which seems to be more about grind/volume (spotting at least 1 tank in hundreds of matches, damaging 1 or more tanks in hundreds of matches) there is a swing from tasks that are assisted by having premium (pure xp based) to tasks accomplished by slog/grind/being present in a match, hundred of times. If that becomes more prevalent then what is the point of premium?
Given I've paid in advance for premium (currently sitting at 360 days) then a significant change in it's value /worth going forward is annoying. If I have no choice but to make additional purchases of gold to take part on top of what I've already invested then that's not good. If this is the way WGCB are taking the game forward, then perhaps they should consider a "combined" premium/season pass offer - and a way to convert existing subs into that, similar to how MS have worked Gold/Game Pass/Ultimate. If you want Ultimate and already have a Gold sub, you can convert the existing months left on your Gold into fewer Ultimate months - as you are gaining access to additional value.
4) Season pass ops - to go with the above, something that stuck me this weekend was around the way the ops have built/changed from previously. Some of the previous activities have been a bit simplistic/easy to complete and I've had mixed feeling about that (point 1 about high tier tanks in the hands of people with less game knowledge) but overall once I got going I always felt it was achievable. I'm not 100% on that with the current event, which given the additional cost of taking part is a concern. Weekly ops structures are coming in with longer term/grind requirements, or ones that are difficult to achieve for me personally, and the "making a point" equivalent with it's never ending escalation of xp requirement is functionally useless over time.
Platoon ops are annoying because I am a solo player, covered off earlier. Gating these means that unless I change my play/find people to play with (and even then it's not guaranteed I'll be able to achieve the op requirement) I'm going to be down multiple levels. I think we have had 2 platoon ops in the 3 weeks to date for 18 or 19 points. If that is repeated over the 8 odd weeks of the event, then potentially I'm missing out on hitting 8, 9 or 10 levels in the season that I can't make up any other way as to date I don't think we have seen any of the previous season/event weekly/one off points tasks that WG put in as bonuses.
My other concern is one that until we get to the back end of the event can't be confirmed, but given what we've seen so far has got me wondering. Will the ops in the final few weeks be pro-rata'ed for achievement in a shorter timescale? In week 3 we have 1 op with 100, 2 ops with 125 and 1 with 300 battle requirements for completion. Will WG bring those down in the final couple of weeks to allow for realistic completion? I play every day to some extent, but have still not quite got the 100 or 125 in the last seven days let alone the 300, so if we had similar requirements in the final week or two then it's highly unlikely I'd get the completions. Put that on top of the platoon only requirements and I can see myself being presented with a sunk cost decision - either miss out on finishing the season/final rewards or pay out gold for single tier skips or a season pass upgrade.
If I was playing only here and there then it's fair to make the case I haven't put the hours in and don't deserve the reward, and paying up to skip/buy out is my choice given lack of effort. But if I'm playing every day and the end point starts feeling unachievable/un-realistic then where is the incentive to take part in the next one? Current progress is 48/100 so on that run rate I should be there or thereabouts, but that's on the assumption that the ops don't keep going up in terms of grind/time sink required. Week 1 and 2 ops (other than the platoon) had less time/volume requirement than week 3 - surely that should be the other way round?
So - there you have it. Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk etc. I'd be interested in peoples thoughts who want to have a discussion about the direction that WGCB is taking the game. As much as I am not a fan of the WWE branding I am looking past that as it is a cosmetic and will change in a few weeks - though it could be to something just as visually unappealing or to subject matter that again I have no interest in - but it's not really the point of the above. I would much rather talk about the developer focus areas, the monetisation model and what it means going forwards/things that could be improved.

Here is that announcement, the changes were:
Today, we would like to discuss a few things with the sub at this point.
These two things often go hand in hand. We have a few rules we have to limit these, but we want your feedback on those posts in general, the rules about them, and what we could change or add to better the subreddit. Those rules are:
Rants are not allowed. Hyperbolic, acerbic, or otherwise inflammatory expressions of dissatisfaction will be classified as a "rant" and removed.
A post may be considered a repost if it covers the topic from nearly the same angle as existing posts.
  • Frequently asked questions and topics will be removed. Please use the search function.
  • Posts will no longer count as a repost at 1 month for posts over 300 upvotes and 1 week for posts between 50 and 300 upvotes.
General feedback is welcome, but we are greatly interested in those topics.
Feedback is one thing that can help us moderators know what we are doing well and what we can improve upon. This thread is for you to give any and all feedback to the mod team of /leagueoflegends. What do you like about the subreddit? What do you dislike? Any ideas, any improvements, anything at all, feel free to share it here!
In order to generate meaningful feedback, please try to give constructive criticism i.e. provide an idea or solution instead of "I don't like this." Please keep all top level comments as feedback, which means if there are memes/jokes, they will be removed.
This thread will last for approximately a week, so be sure to get your word in before it goes!
Please state clearly which rule/aspect of moderation/the subreddit your post refers to at the start of your post. We may not reply to every single comment here, but we will definitely do our best to look at them all.

2020.08.09 22:25 baheeprissdimme Klansman, Cofradías, and Capirotes - oh my! (bonus learns at the end)

Recently, while scrolling through instagram, I came across a page that posted this meme. I think the page is a troll, but the content comes from an unrelated Facebook page and seems to have been posted as if it were a matter of fact, so I thought it was worthy of some investigation. You may, at this point, be wondering if this even counts as bad history, but it is certainly making a historical claim, mostly implicitly, and it's worth nitpicking. The text from the image is as follows: "This is a catholic [sic] ritual called Cofradias done around Easter time all in the name of Jesus. And you say the KKK isn't related to Christianity, you is a damn lie."   mfw.   This post is implying a causal connection between the use of capirotes in Catholic processions and their use by the second Ku Klux Klan. Since the capirote has been in use by Catholic confraternities (spanish: cofradías) for centuries1 , to see if this connection is valid or not we need to try to pin down the reason the Klan started using their infamous regalia.   There are a few theories about the origin of the white KKK robe and hood, and most of them center around the Second Ku Klux Klan. The second Klan started in 1915, but the first instance of a white-robed Klan uniform comes in 1905, with the publishing of Thomas Dixon Jr.'s The Clansman: An Historical Romance of the Ku Klux Klan. The frontispiece, done by Arthur I. Keller, has a member of the Klan in anachronistic white robes with a draped white face cover and a hard, rounded helmet with a point on the top. According to Kinney, Dixon adapted this depiction into a "conical white hat"2 , but looking to the 1925 Catalogue of Official Robes and Banner, Knights of the KKK we can see that these were not exactly similar to the, by this time relatively long, capirote (as seen here). Essentially, the hats used by and associated with the second and third Klans do not have a clear basis in Catholic cofradías or their capirotes, making the central claim of the above meme pretty bad history. There are some other issues with the meme, like that they call confraternities a "ritual" done "all in the name of Jesus", and that they conflate Catholicism with the Protestant Christianity espoused by the Second KKK (who HATED Catholics). In my research I also came across a hotep who think the KKK stole their uniform from a specifically African cofradía, but I have similar issues with the article as the meme.   bonus learns: this post was inspired by the meme linked, but I really only care about capirotes and cofradías because of a class in which I learned about Pieter van Laer, a painter around the time most associated with Baroque art but who depicted street scenes and everyday life. He gained a degree of fame at his time that was lost by subsequent generations of art historians who had a hard time fitting his work into the whole Early Renaissance -> High Renaissance -> Baroque scheme. Post-Tridentine Italian art is a fuckin blast to learn about and if you want to I recommend Art and Reform in the Late Renaissance: After Trent ed. Jesse Locker.     Sources: 1. Pieter van Laer, The Flagellants, 1630s what's better than this? guys bein dudes. The Wikipedia page for capirotes establishes this with words, but I love van Laer 2. Kinney, Alison. HOOD (excerpt published here as "How the Klan Got Its Hood" General info (used but not quoted) - David M. Chalmers' Hooded Americanism: The History of the Ku Klux Klan, 1987 (this book gave me the sense that the author had a weird bias, almost pro-Klan, if anyone knows anything about him I'd appreciate a comment) edits for formatting

2020.08.09 19:47 Dauss The Poison Crossbow Meme; Or my idea on where we take it from here (New weapon suggestion)

Howdy folks;
So I think it's pretty safe to say that, while many of us disagree about which weapons sit where in the meta, the poison hand crossbow sits pretty safely in meme tier.
It's a medium slot weapon that is difficult to use, requires a trait to reload before you die of old age, and cannot kill a Hunter in one shot even to the face (as far as I'm aware anyways, I couldn't find any volunteers to confirm that). While also fairly meme-y, the regular hand crossbow can at least potentially kill a hunter with one hit, and has recoverable ammunition.
Now, it's not as bad as it sounds; the Poison Crossbow has a few features (many of which it has recently been buffed with and you may not be aware of if you haven't tried using it in a while).
Whereas it used to create a little puff of poison similar to a poison bomb, it now instead deals impact damage only. However this damage is much more effective against certain enemies. It is the only ranged weapon which can silently and instantly kill Armored and Immolators. It's particularly useful against the latter, who won't so much as even howl or ignite, they'll just keel over dead on impact. It's also been made somewhat more effective against the Assassin (but in this meta who uses anything but a sticky bomb or melee against the boss monsters amirite). The Hive is obviously resistant/immune to poison damage.
It's also somewhat effective against Meatheads, though true to their form it takes a fair bit of ammo to put one down. About 7 shots last time I tried. At least you'll be quiet doing it, and the Meathead itself will just swing around blindly in the process.
So; it's still pretty bad, even after these changes. It's good for about 2 or 3 types of monsters, and while it's very good against those monsters, it's hard to justify packing it as a medium slot weapon even with Quartermaster. So what do we do with it?
Well, here's my suggestion.
This is an antique cattle vaccination gun. Despite my best efforts I couldn't find the exact history of these devices, but since we've been vaccinating cattle since before 1895, I'm going to roll with this idea on the assumption that they were around during that era. I'm proposing a new small slot weapon similar in function to the existing poison crossbow, with a few caveats.
This modified cattle injection gun uses blank cartridges to propel a deadly poison filled syringe at foes. Ideal for discrete eliminations at close range.
As the flavour text would imply, it'd be such a device, hunter modified to load blank cartridges and propel a small poison syringe when the trigger is depressed. Mechanically:
Now, a weapon like this would make the existing poison crossbow almost completely useless, so it would need to be buffed. My suggestion on that front:
This would give the poison crossbow a niche as a quiet Meathead killer when they give you problems sitting on top of a clue, and a useful crow/duck silencer, who currently can only be 'quietly' removed with a lantern throw. The additional damage to hunters, with the potential for a one hit kill, means you could also reasonably decide to pack it as a medium slot weapon without feeling like you're sacrificing too much. Additionally, it could be used like a mini-poison bomb launcher to make invading a banish site trickier for enemy hunters; a few bolts launched at windows or doors with the shorter lasting lingering cloud of poison would make attackers have to think twice (or pack an antidote shot, which could benefit from being a little more effective in this meta).
I think that's all my musings on the idea for now, but I value your input. What do you think of this idea, would the small slot syringe gun tempt you for your loadout small slot as a means of quietly, and instantly dispatching some of the more tanky monsters? Do the proposed buffs to the poison crossbow make you feel like you'd consider it as a medium slot weapon?

2020.08.07 17:45 shomman r/CANZUK August 2020 Subreddit Update

Hi all,
Got a lot of different things to run through - thing's we've done so far, things we are going to do this month, and a few things we aren't sure about and would like your thoughts on.

Changes so far:

We've been trying to make changes and iterations as quickly as possible to make things easier for anyone new joining and better for everyone already here. Here's a rundown of the changes made since the last update on July 20th:.
  • Added more detailed rules as per July Update. Check them out in the sidebar.
  • Added six post flairs as per July Update. Filters available on the sidebar. Flaired every post.
  • Added an Introduction/FAQ to the wiki and subreddit top bar here based on u/Jiffyrabbit's post.
  • Had our first Roundtable discussion here. I will continue to post new topics and pin the post each week. Please feel free to suggest topics for discussion.
  • Added Removal Reasons for posts/comments that break any of the rules and are removed by mods.
  • Added posting guidelines and requirement for posts to be flaired.
  • Added dozens of user flairs for every Country, State and Territory (Internal and External) in CANZUK. (Note, I did not add flags of places that are uninhabited.) If the image I've added for a flair sucks, feel free to message Modmail with an alternative and I'd be happy to change it. For example, the states for Australia and Canada I used some variations and Coats of Arms because they look nicer.
  • Made user flair text customisable on all flairs.

New Changes:

These are changes we are going to make going forward based on your feedback threads and messages and how the subreddit is going.
  • No More Memes (CANZUKMemes): Memes and image edits can be fun, but they are becoming overbearing in the subreddit, taking away from discussion or media posts that might otherwise make it onto people's front pages and generate discussion. This decreases serious discussion in the subreddit and the quality of the subreddit as a whole. We have noticed that legitimate questions and discussions raised by skeptics are being downvoted. Additionally the discussion below these memes is very poor and often issues are not properly discussed as they would be on more serious posts - such as racism discussions. This was discussed publicly here. We have received a lot of calls to take action on memes, and compromises like Meme Monday and Meme Megathreads have their own problems. Memes will be welcome on CANZUKMemes. As always let us know your thoughts.
  • Instituting a couple of anti-spam/anti-troll automod measures. There have been a couple of instances of alt accounts and spam on the subreddit. These should limit them.

Things we want to discuss

  • Flag posts - They haven't been posted nearly as much as usual, and are all contained within the "Casual" flair. How does that feel? Do we need to take any further measures to reduce the flag posts or are they fine where they are?
  • Roundtable discussions the discussion on that post was fairly slow and noneventful - I'm happy to continue doing them just wondering if you guys have any ideas about how to make them better, and would be keen on more topic suggestions.
  • Templates for Letters to MPs. I have created a wiki page here about what people can do to help CANZUK become a reality. I do not have templates for Canada, New Zealand or Australia - so I'd love your help in adding those. Also welcome any feedback or thoughts on the wiki page.
  • Potential Brigading on recent thread about how to spread the word: We need everyone to be aware that sometimes, this behaviour crosses over into Brigading, a reddit site-wide rule that we really need to stay on the correct side of. Here is a Reddit Admin comment about what can constitute brigading and that we need to avoid:
  • following a link in which the OP has directed you to vote in a certain direction and then voting can be considered vote manipulation. We often detect this automatically, throw out the votes, and if we see it we will issue a suspension and explain to the user why they need to stop.
  • following a link that is just linking you to a post in another subreddit and then voting can be considered vote manipulation. We often detect this automatically, throw out the votes, and if we see it we will issue a suspension and explain to the user why they need to stop. Please use NP links - i.e. "" and do not vote in other subreddits in a way that could be considered brigading. We need to stay on the right side of Reddit's site-wide rules.
Alright! That's all for now. As always we have all discussed this together, it is not any one mod's decision, and we always want your feedback and thoughts. Let us know how the subreddit is doing and if you have ideas for how to improve it.
tl;dr: a bunch of changes have been made to make the subreddit more organised, interesting and welcoming for new people. We are going to make more changes - most notably stopping meme posts and allowing them on CANZUKmemes

2020.08.05 18:45 Paramus98 [Effortpost] Using the Past to Understand the Present: The 60's and Today

Rioting on the streets during protests on police brutality, public incidents of far-right terrorism, student activism showing a generation of young people embracing radical left politics that goes beyond that of the progressives and liberals in the Democratic Party.
This may seem like a description of the current day political climate, (while rioting does seem to have largely died down from its peak in the first week or two of protests, some cities had more sustained unrest) and that wouldn't be inaccurate, but it just as well could be a description of America in the mid to late 1960's. I think looking back at our past in a time of great crisis and unrest can be useful for putting current day unrest in perspective.
A few years ago (and still today to a lesser extent) I felt uneasy reading accounts of young people being radicalized into the alt right, often through social media or other online platforms. Listening to stories of ISIS radicalization gave me a similar discomfort. And today with many left-wing political movements the trend seems the same, young, disaffected youth searching for identity find a community of people online to identify with. In the midst of a number of young people giving accounts of being "radicalized" I wanted to look at the past and compare past radical movements of the 1960's to today and see if the new factor of the internet looks to make these movements more prevalent or dangerous.
Riots and Social Unrest
First though, let’s take a look at the rioting, looting and chaotic protests that have begun during the aftermath of the death of George Floyd. The costs of riots in Minneapolis totaled to over 500 million dollars, the second highest costs of civil unrest since the 1.4 billion dollar (in 2020 dollars) bill brought on by the Rodney King Riots. 10-15 million dollars was done in Atlanta, "tens of millions" in New York City and more damage in countless other cities.
Let's try to put this into some perspective, looking back at the toll of the Rodney King riots, that was more than twice as much damage as from the George Floyd Protests in Minnesota alone, but the Rodney King riots were mostly limited to LA in a way that riots following the death of George Floyd weren't with at least 25 cities reporting some level of violence in the outbreak of protests. So, while the costs may not be as high as the Rodney King Riots, they are higher than rioting in the 60's. The Watts riots for example totaled 40 million dollars of damage at the time (327 million today), and other riots of the 60's were all less costly (at least in terms of dollar value) than the Watts riots were.
Financial cost is but one metric to look at though, human life is another to consider. A concrete answer on the extent to which protests exacerbated the spread of COVID-19 would be impossible to find (especially as contact tracers generally weren’t collecting information on if people attended protests), but keep in mind that is an additional potential cost to mass protests today. Two weeks into the George Floyd protests, the death toll was 19, and there hasn’t been a huge surge in uncovered deaths since then. Compare that to the death toll of riots in the Long, Hot Summer of 1967, 26 people were killed in Newark and 43 in Detroit. The King Assassination Riots killed 43 people. and the Watts riots killed 34. Looking at just human life lost the picture in 2020 looks much better, with nationwide deaths lower than the deaths of individual city's riots in the 60's. Meanwhile in the Rodney King Riots there were 64 deaths, many of them unsolved to this day.
While the property damage numbers today are still greater, the very substantial decrease in violence is still something to celebrate. And while a greater value of property was destroyed in recent waves of protests, part of that is likely explained by the increase of value of property between the mid 60's and today. The same level of destruction of physical property will cause more damage even after accounting for inflation because of the economic growth that has occurred since the mid 1960’s.
Revolutionary Activism
While the chaos today may be less intense than that of the 1960's. that doesn't mean the actors involved are necessarily also less radical. Next, let’s compare some of the major players in what I'll call "revolutionary politics" (and minor but important players as well) of the 60's with some of the major groups and ideologies going around in that a similar tradition today. The goal here isn't to label all these as equivalent with each other, since some are terrorist organizations who've killed a number of people while others are mostly just groups of young idealistic university students, but all of these are skeptical of a liberal democratic political framework as a possibility to attain power and put into action their ideas. Some groups don't exactly fit into that lens either as they are using current power structures to gain power within the government, but I think there's still a rejection of liberalism as a framework as well as a desire to transform the current system to one unrecognizable to the current one (or to the system of the 1960's in the case of older groups). Even if the radical label is contentious to some, the revolutionary label need not be since most of these groups are explicitly revolutionary. This list is in no way exhaustive and there are countless groups that will be missing from this list.
These notable revolutionary actors are put into three categories: Left wing groups, right wing groups and black nationalist groups. Black nationalists have some overlap with the left-wing groups (and surprisingly with some right-wing groups even) but to have them in their own category is helpful as Black Nationalism really is its own thing. Again, hopefully the focus here isn't on the categorization than the groups themselves.
Black Nationalism
Several prominent Black Nationalist groups were present and notable in the 1960's, to list just a few:
Looking at Black Nationalism in 2020 the picture is a lot smaller, but unlike other movements we’ll look at later, there's much more consistency within Black Nationalist organizations than far left and far right groups.
Black Nationalism appears to be a movement far past its prime. NOI is still going but at smaller numbers than in the past, and it’s more concerning as an extremist cult than a movement that could ever attain substantial power. Interestingly there has been at least one incident of Black Nationalist radicalization in the case of the 2016 Dallas Police shootings, so radicalization in this way could still occur today even with the ideology looking like it's on the decline.
Far Left Groups on the 60's (and early 70's)
Students for a Democratic Society: SDS is the major group to look at for left wing radicalism of the 60's, it led to all sorts of splinter groups and a powerful political movement that would end up defining much of the 60's and early 70's. The history of this group isn't really that important, basically they stemmed from a socialist group called the League for Industrial Democracy which stemmed from another socialist group called the Intercollegiate Socialist Society that was formed in 1905. In the early 60's the freshly minted Students for a Democratic Society put out the Port Huron Statement, a 250,000 word statement outlining their goals. It's a lot easier of a read than you might think, I'd recommend giving it a quick skim at the least. If you don’t have the time, here are a few important points that stick out:
SDS would grow considerably in the face of social unrest over both civil rights and an escalating conflict in Vietnam, and it reached a peak of 100k members in 1969 growing 100 times from its size at formation. Throughout its existence it was a somewhat eclectic organization, while the initial manifesto was vaguely libertarian socialist, support for civil rights and opposition to the Vietnam war were the two main issues holding a few ideologically diverse groups together. For most of its life the group consisted of liberals, Marxists, Marxist-Leninists, Anarchists, and others. Within those groups views on race and gender were varied as well, many women within the group found the group a lot more hostile to women than their rhetoric would suggest. Of course a group with that many different factions can only survive so long, and infighting would cause SDS to dissolve into a number of different groups. (My source on much of the splitting of SDS can be found here)
Eventually this divide would help lead to the fall of SDS as a prominent organization, other conflicts included conflict between Black SDS members and white women as both (obviously not universally) viewed the other with skepticism as always pushing their side of issues and ignoring prejudice against either group within SDS. Another smaller schism group was the Weathermen who would later be known as the Weather Underground, a black nationalist terrorist group responsible for a few bombings, mostly in 1970. The group's threat can be overstated though, FBI consistently had a presence in it, and overestimated the size of the group at 1000 when in reality it was in the triple digits. Certainly the group was a dangerous one, but it wasn't nearly as large as it's notoriety would suggest.
Left wing political parties probably don’t warrant a whole section, but they're fun to talk about so here are three notable ones:
So why did left wing activism decline? Several different explanations have been given, and as is often the case, some combination of them all is likely an accurate reason.
Left Wing Revolutionaries Today
After all that on the left in the 60's it’s worse comparing the left today to see what parallels (if any) can be found in the modern era.
In some ways I think it's helpful to compare DSA to SDS, but not in all. DSA currently is set up to ensure there's a good amount of diversity in leadership, requiring half of it's highest leadership to be female and a quarter to be minorities, so with stable leadership there shouldn't be the kind of splitting over race or gender issues present in SDS. As well DSA have chosen a different path to pursue their accumulation of power through in the Democratic party rather than in Universities. DSA also rejects central planning outright in favor of a greater democratization of the workplace and society. That means potentially a smaller presence of the authoritarian left within the group, so any splitting off over issues like that would be less major. There also (at least as far as we can know) isn't a mass FBI plot to destabilize and undermine the group.
Some elements still hold in common though, the groups both share(d) similar goals of democratizing society to the greatest extent, and while the early days of SDS leaned quite heavily towards libertarian socialisms, in time Marxism-Leninism would gain popularity as well, it's not impossible that could occur within DSA too. It's not as if prominent DSA members haven't spoken well of strongmen already after all. And DSA seems to be perfectly willing to support left wing autocrats like Maduro, so I'm a bit skeptical of the extent to which the organization doesn't have at the least a pretty substantial level of Marxist-Leninists. Time will tell if DSA can reach the peaks of SDS but the much more important question is how well it can stick around. There are a few roadblocks SDS had that DSA doesn't, but it's far from a certainty that there's even a clear path for them to get to the part of their goal where they split off into their own party (and when they do if they'll just end up splitting a bunch of votes).
There are a few other more issues-based groups like the climate centric Sunrise Movement or the Black Lives Matter organization, but I don't think these type groups are very sustainable. BLM for example had a director do an AMA and it was pretty poorly received due to unclear objectives and lack of transparency over how money is spent. Sunrise Movement and many other climate groups have embraced the Green New Deal and made it a purity test for supporting a politician, something I see likely backfiring, especially due to their willingness to be confrontational to Democratic Party leadership. While these groups may very well bring more attention to issues, I don't see them setting the agenda as nearly as much as they just force a topic more into the conversation.
So how does left wing activism today compare to the 60's? Well it's hard to say. We're currently in the middle of a growing moment of left wing activism among youths, if right now is it's peak the left certainly never grew as big, but if right now is more where SDS was at in 1965 with Vietnam energizing their movement, it's certainly possible the same could be happening with Trump energizing groups like DSA further, and with less outside opposition, it's possible these organizations could find themselves more long lasting in the future. On the other hand, societal shifts are still commonplace, and it's not like the landscape couldn't radically change from here on out. To best tell how successful these groups are at getting power, keep a watchful eye on these movements, since much of the activism involves changing the Democratic Party, perhaps the best indicator of their success would be watching how the Democratic party changes in response to them. If there's a level of recalibration that's not indicative of a takeover necessarily, but if Justice Dems begin to get important leadership roles within the party, then a revolutionary moment really might not be out of the question. With a very old Democratic Party leadership right now, that could open up a vacuum that the most left-wing Democrats will likely try to fill.
The Far Right of the 1960's
I initially just wanted to focus on left wing groups here, a few years ago alt right radicalization seemed to be a trend but as notable figures of that movement began to fade away I perceived the left to be filling that vacuum; however, reports of far right instigators during the George Floyd protests both made me question the movement's relative irrelevance and also wonder the extent of far right activism in the 60's.
Birchers at the time were growing in their influence over the GOP and many in elite GOP circles worried about what could happen to the party if this cancer on conservatism were to continue to go untreated. William Buckley Jr. and others at National Review with a different model of conservatism for the GOP tried to either publicly shun or keep a general distance from the group to prevent a Bircher takeover of the party. Which worked quite well as for a few decades the GOP would continue to advocate for greater immigration and more liberal trade as libertarians took hold of much of the party dogma following the end of the Bircher's influence. At their peak in the 60's they had nearly 100k members, so size wise they were comparable to the SDS, certainly that's enough to sway public opinion at least a bit.
The Far Right Today
According to George Washington University's Program on Extremism, current state of the far right is best divided into two separate groups, White Supremacists and Patriot Movement Members. There is some overlap between the two though.
There's likely always going to be some level of societal fringe racist extremists in a given country, but the increasing violence of these groups in particularly concerning. 2019 was the 6th most violent year since the ADL began keeping count and far right violence far outpaces any other such violence in the US. The rise of the alt right and the internet and social media as a means of communication no doubt have played a role in the rising prevalence of such attacks.
White Supremacist groups aren't the only far right groups that are important in American life today, since the 90's another form of extremism called the Patriot Movement has risen to prominence. The Patriot movement is characterized by extreme anti-government sentiments, and while there is some overlap with white supremacy, one certainly need not be a white supremacist to fit into this category. Some examples:
You'll notice I tried to follow up on each of the groups I mentioned in the 60's. Whether they're active today or how they fell apart or lost much influence. The last one I have to touch on is the John Birch Society, but the Birchers are an interesting group in that all the other groups I mentioned from the 60's lost a lot of their influence over the past 50-60 years, but after being rejected by the Republican Party quite soundly, the Birchers were irrelevant for decades and looked like another group who'd turn into a think of the past...
But then an interesting thing happened. In 2010 CPAC had an interesting new co-sponsor, which on one hand isn't a huge deal, CPAC has always been full of nuts, but on the other hand it was only the first step in an increasing Bircher influence within the GOP. They certainly haven't moderated their views, believing in the Illuminati (and also that the CFR is an Illuminati ally) or that George W. Bush was pushing for one world government.
Looking at urban unrest and violence, the situation seems better than the 60's, but the biggest question is whether the unrest we saw in early June and late May will turn out to be a one off thing or become a yearly tradition like in the 60's. A Trump re-election this year would likely only increase instability and make a continual pattern of unrest as summer approaches more likely, and certainly COVID lockdowns contributed to a sense of both outrage, boredom and uneasiness that made protests more dynamic. Likely (hopefully) future summers won't have this factor in place. Trump is far from the only reason unrest has risen though, regardless of who occupies the White House, growing unrest remains a possibility.
Looking at Black Nationalism, the movement is basically dead. While I have some reservations about implicit calls for segregation from some among the hyper progressive left, in the 60's explicit black separatism was commonplace among activists in a way it just isn't today.
Looking at left wing activism, some impediments towards long term sustainability for these movements remain the same from the 60's, but others (such as FBI interference) don't appear to be existent and others (such as family formation moderating view) occur less today than in the 60's. It's too early to tell if 2020 is the left's peak or not. I could easily see a scenario where Biden wins in November and kills a good amount of momentum for the left as they lost their best foil in Donald Trump (someone so broadly easy to hate is unlikely to win office again), but I could also see a reality where the Tea Party model is followed within the Democratic Party and leadership struggles to balance the concerns of Progressives with the concerns of moderates. Democrats should learn from the Republicans failures and ensure elites within the party can still gatekeep elections. The successful anti-Sanders campaign before Super Tuesday shows the party still has some capacity for gatekeeping, especially when contrasted with the failure of Republicans to keep the much less qualified Donald Trump from winning the nomination in 2016.
Looking at the right, far right groups still present a threat to the country and should be addressed, (and are being addressed in some cases) but I'm not concerned about the possibility of a second civil war or any of this accelerationist nonsense actually working. Revolution is unlikely.
While Justice Dems taking over the Democratic Party is a possibility I worry about, the Bircher takeover of the GOP is farther along than the left's takeover of their party. Perhaps no notable politician best exemplifies the Bircher tradition than Donald Trump, quick to throw out unsubstantiated conspiracy theories, staunchly anti-trade and anti-immigration, gives speeches opposing the "globalists". And this isn't just a Trump phenomenon, a number of Qanon supporters have won primaries this year, the current SoS thinks baseless conspiracies about Ukraine warrant investigation, Ted Cruz blames the "deep state" foremost of policy for Trump's lack of execution on policy. Arguments rooted in conspiracy are commonplace within much of the GOP today and we're likely seeing the consequences of a GOP without a Buckley like gatekeeper to the party's right to prevent the party from straying into dangerous territory. Perhaps these new Birchers will end up self-destructing like countless other extremist groups have, I'd even say it's likely, but until they do the party will continue to find itself in need of some sort of gatekeeping authority to cleanse itself of a seemingly growing neo-Bircher faction.
